What would be better? Tiger, or Panther?

I was given 3 of them today by the PC user group I go to, they dont do macs.

They all have 256MB of RAM and 7GB of HDD space, with CD-ROM drives.

I have Panther and Tiger on CD-ROM discs. Which do you think would be nicer on these guys?

I love these things, they look so nice. One of them I bumped up to 512MB and installed a 10GB HDD instead of the 7GB. This same one looks friggin brand-new, not a scratch or scuff from what I can see. Came with the original packaging, keyboard, mouse, discs, manuals, and power cord.

I'd go Panther. I ran Tiger and Panther on my old G3 Powerbook (333Mhz), and Panther just felt snappier.

I would go with tiger. If not just for the dashboard. I would max out the ram. I am running tiger on my kitchen imac g3 400 with 256 megs of ram. It is slowish, but it runs the original eyetv, and I have the radar and mixed drink widgets on the dash.

With just 256MB RAM, Panther would be quicker... But I have a iMac@400MHz that runs Tiger decently. Debian Linux, with Xfce desktop, works rather well too. More RAM helps quite a bit.

i'll second that. 512mb and upgrade to a 7200rpm hard drive. then tiger or panther will run great. several like that here (tiger). give them to kids for 'safe' internet browsing. keeps the kids/parents happy, and keeps computers out of the landfill. sweet!

If you want to spend 100 bucks upgrade the RAM and internal HD. Your computer will run much faster. Tiger will be fine with it. Even at 384 MB my 500 MHz iMac was manageable with Tiger.

I put Panther on it, and it felt kinda choppy and laggy, so now I'm gonna put Tiger on it today. This is on the machine I upgraded with 512MB of RAM and a 7200RPM 10GB Western Digital Caviar SE drive.

Just get used to that feeling, I use mine as an itunes/eyetv box. I have an airport card and just use it to surf bboards. It is great for that. Just dont try to stream flash. I envy your HD. I just threw in an 80 gig and sync my ipod to it. But it is only a 5400.

You upgraded to 10 GB or it had 10 GB and you upgraded it? Or was that a typo and you mean 100 GB? If so, you should have put 120 GB in it.

It won't feel any less choppy or laggy. That's just the way it is, compared to the iBook with Quartz Extreme in your sig.

My 500mhz iMac is choppy and laggy compared to my MBP, to say the least. But I just upgraded it to 512mb and a Seagate 100 gb drive. This made a huge difference. And it's much more quiet now too. The old 20 gb drive sounded like a 747.

They are about 55 bucks for a 120 GB, 7200 RPM, and 8 MB cache drive that is much quieter. Not only that, but Tiger takes up 5.5 GB. Why not put it in?

id definetly just go with tiger and then get a little program call something along the lines of DisableTigerFeatures i think, anyways it gets rid of dashboard and spotlight, which both reduce system performance. so you get what is an essentially more modern version of panther. did it on my 700mhz snow imac and it made a huge difference. also, when u go to install os x, pretty much install everything except os x itself. no need of those excess drivers and languages and whatnot. : )
