I've had an SSD sitting on top of my Mac pro for a while waiting to find a place inside the case. I saw the MaxUpgrades adapter and was generally annoyed they charge so much for just a stupid physical adapter [edit: it used to be $80, I guess now it's $40]. Some people on this board even report the thing doesn't work in all the MP models.

Nothing annoys me more than companies pulling this kind of crap, so when I read on MR (I forget who/what thread) there was a plastic 3.5 -> 2.5" adapter that works with SSD, I jumped on it, and it's working great! I searched for a thread about this specifically and couldn't find one so I posted this.

In addition to being compatible with any 3.5" holder, the manufacturer's website specifically mentions that it is Mac Pro compatible.

This thing may not be suitable for mechanical 2.5" drives as it is plastic and may not ventilate well enough, but for SSDs like mine, it's working really, really well in my Mac Pro 1,1.

So please stop posting links to MaxUpgrades and their overpriced silliness.

I have always used Icy Dock adapters for converting my 2.5" drives to mount into 3.5" backplanes. Many of these I own has been working for ages.

I only pay for more expensive adapters if I see a design or function that makes it worth paying more for basically the same thing. An example I can think of is the optibay solutions many people sell:
Most are just a metal or plastic shell that you slide your drive into and then they supposedly hook up into your computer. I found that only the MaxUpgrades/OWC adapter has the proper mounting holes to securely screw into the MacBook [Pro] chassis. Because most third-party adapters are designs for standard PCs which have different mounting solutions compared to what Apple does, I find paying more for the MaxUpgrades/OWC adapter worth it in this case.

Anyways I'm saying is some adapters have small features here and there are most people do not notice until they use something that doesn't have it.

I found my SSD light enough to just push into the SATA connector and leave like that, but I might get this for easy removal and reinsertion. Thanks!

The Icey Dock works great in a Mac Pro. Have installed 3 SSD using them with no problems. Heat is not a problem as the SSD has no moving parts.

And did you really pay $80.00? Purchase mine from Hong Kong dealers at $17.95 each. You gotta shop around not to be stung. It is a marketers world out there to make as much profit as possible.

No I didn't pay for it, my SSD was literally sitting on top of my Mac pro hooked up with a long cable to the internal ODD port for like a year--no joke.

Oh yes, I'm that cheap.
