Info from old G4 to new iMac

Just bought a new 27" iMac and have to get my old info out of my G4. The G4's logic board is fried so I can't power it on. I was going to use migration assistant to transfer the info but without being able to power it on that idea looks troublesome. Can I transfer the info from the old harddrive to the new without having to power it on?

The only other thing I can do is buy an old working G4 and swap its logic board into my broken one or install my harddrive into it. Any thoughts?
 
never knew either of these existed so thanks for the heads up! much easier than having to wait for another mac to show up just to get the data off the drive.

so you just plug the drive into these cases and then plug the case into the mac via usb?

The are called external enclosures. You just have to know what type of hard drive you have inside your G4, ie, Sata, ide, etc. You would need an external enclosure that would say ide to usb or sata to usb, depending on what type of hard drive you had inside the G4 that the data you want to transfer.

Remember, you are taking out the old hard drive and putting it in the enclosure, so you can transfer to the new iMac which has USB 2.0. Don't worry what the G4 uses, you won't need it. Just take the hard drive out of the G4, put the hard drive in the enclosure(I think the one you are suggesting should work). Plug the drive into the USB port on your new imac, and you should then see the drive on your new iMac and be able to transfer everything to your new computer.
 
That enclosure you linked to will work fine.
Migration assistant can be a bit hit n miss (in my experience) with applications (especially crossing the PPC/Intel divide), but works fine for music, docs, etc.

Crap I wasn't even thinking that way. Big brain fart there. Thanks for the help you guys really got me out of a jam on this one.

I read that somewhere else too, so I think I'll just use it to grab my pics, music, files etc and try to figure out something else for the other stuff. Thanks!
