Not sure if this is the right place, but:

I setup my M1Pro MacBook Pro from scratch und now I want to inherit old Time Machine backups. I tried the same that was posted in this Apple support thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252980885

And I got the same error, but could not find any way to overcome that.

Any ideas? Is it not possible with M1 Macs?

Cheers!
Stefan

I managed to claim the backups from my previous late 2013 intel MacBook Pro on my new 2021 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro by giving it the same name and adding the time machine disks and following the prompts and entering passwords, but have run into the Monterey issue where it goes through the motions of doing a time machine backup but never seems to update the backup on my NAS, so the last back up date on the device is still the last intel backup. Don't get any errors.

I'm going to be doing the same thing soon. Curious if your backup is HFS+ or APFS. The later I have heard reports of problems. Either way, maybe it's worth filing a bug report so Apple knows about it? It should be simpler than the steps listed by DaveMcM76; I think it should just work. If his was HFS+ and yours maybe APFS, then there could still be an issue.
