Hi,
I was lucky enough to inherit my friend's 3G iphone (he wanted the 3GS), but it's locked and I'm on T-Mobile. I'm interested in unlocking the phone, but I only have my T-Mobile sim card and when I insert it, it says it's locked.

Hooking it up to itunes, it isn't recognized.

Where do I start?

I've tried reading the posts and have gotten increasingly lost - firmware, yellowsn0w, quickpwn..... I sense the forum users have a much higher level of computer savvy than I do, so I think the explanation has to be extremely simple and almost step by step and even the post that is near the top of this forum isn't super clear to me.

Question #1: Do I need a sim card to unlock the phone (I do have my T-mobile sim card, it doesn't seem to be required at this point, until the phone is unlocked)

Question #2: Is the unlock process something like this?

1) Download the correct firmware (the latest one appears to be 3.1.2?)
2) Download one of the *pwn* applications (I'm on a PC, so I'm not sure which one to use)
3) Do all sorts of button pushing

Question #3: Am I correct in understanding that once unlocked, you must be super savvy about any "updates" from Apple? Once unlocked, does the iphone sync well with itunes even though unlocked?

Sorry to be so dense, if I could find a reputable service to pay, I'd do that, but so many of these third party $29.99 sites seems so sketchy, I thought I'd try here.

Thanks in advance.

hmm. nope all jailbreaking is free and many guides are there to help you. have your friend activate it with his at&t sim and then go to blackra1n.com. then click on the windows logo, open the app, and click make it ra1n. now after the process is done, on your iphone go to blackra1n, and download blacksn0w. this will unlock your iphone so you can use it with at&t. also download cydia cuz ur iphone is now jailbroken and unlocked.

Well, you've come to the right place. You don't happen to know what version of the OS is installed on your phone, do you? You can check it in Settings>General>About>Firmware Version.
