I have read everything I can find and have forum searched and Google searched and can not find an answer for this simple (for me) question. The question shows my complete lack of understanding of exactly how connections are made.

If I buy a 3G capable IPad and do not initially sign up for the AT&T service, can I do so while riding in a car down the highway? IE while evacuating for a hurricane? In other words does the signup require that you be connected via WIFI when you try to get the AT&T service or can it initially be done via cellular directly to AT&T?

It can be done via 3G, I didn't sign mine up until I was out and about for the first time (about 3 hours after mine showed up at my door that is).

Thanks zaphon. That sure makes it handy for me as I would only use the service in emergencies and the random vacation.

Like the previous poster said, yes, you can sign up over 3G, no WiFi needed. However, if you do try to sign up while running from a hurricane, you could find that cell phone service is disrupted by the hurricane! :D
