I've been reading the forum in anticipation of the iPhone release on 6/29 in search of information. It's been a big help. But after thinking a great deal about waiting in line all day/night to purchase one, I've come to an important conclusion that I haven't seen much discussion on.

Specifically, AT&T/Cingular is well in the process of rolling out their 3G network all over the US and will supposedly be nearing completion by the end of the 2007 (per the Cingular hold music while waiting for their rep). If this is the case, and the initial release of the iPhone supports EDGE only, then everyone who buys one is signing on for a two year contract, purportedly including a data plan, on a phone that will very likely be replaced by a version that supports 3G in only six months. 3G is supposedly dramatically faster than EDGE and thereby better justifies the monthly data plan rate. But if, by purchasing an iPhone that supports EDGE only, you're committed to a 2 year contract, and six months later, you want to buy the new 3G iPhone to keep up with technology, then you're looking at another two years on top of your initial 2 year commitment or 3 1/2 years at that point. Plus, your initial expense of $499-$599 is then nearly unrecoverable as resale prices will plummet for the older EDGE only phones.

In summary, given the above, I'm seriously thinking of waiting until the 3G phone is available to purchase. That said, if no data plan is required, I'll buy one on 6/29 just for the coolness factor.

Something to think about.

A corporate AT&T customer service rep. told me a few minutes ago that a data plan is not required. There is so much Wifi around (especially for a college student) that I don't think a data plan would be required.

3G is a nonfactor. The phone has wifi and 3G is not widely available enough to be useful. I can get by using EDGE when wifi is not available.

I don't know... If 3G is so much faster than EDGE (which it sounds like it is), then maybe I'll wait... I live in Las Vegas, and I don't exactly know if 3G is even available here. The main draws of the iPhone (to me) is the Internet, widescreen iPod, and text messaging. By waiting, I can possibly reap these benefits-
-Increased Data Capacity (hopefully 16 GB)
-AIM
-3G
-More colors (hey, you never know. I think the iPhone would look sweet in white)

I don't know... the iPhone looks so cool. I really don't want to wait. :(

My theory is that if I wait for 6 months, there will be another reason in six months to wait. I have been waiting 6 months already and I have given my phone to someone that lost theirs, so I need a phone. WiFi is almost everywhere I go, and EDGE should be sufficient until then. I would like more memory and GPS, but I don't want to give up any battery life for either of those two features.

Everything else is software and can and will be fixed and improved.

I live in a major city where 3G would be helpful. My plan is to purchase an iPhone now and when the 3G version is released, I will sell the current one and purchase an updated one.
But I guess only time will tell. ATT is supposedly upgrading their EDGE speeds, so this might not be necessary. Again, only time will tell.

I have no idea where you all live that you have constant WiFi. What do you do in the car, etc. etc. etc. If you don't live in Mountain View or something, what good is the phone if you have to constantly run into Starbucks or other hotspots?

I'm missing something aren't I?

A buddy of mine that works in telecom told me that evdo and 3G are not all they are cracked up to be. He claimed that the highest speeds were attained using the carrier specific apps and services like tv or verizon.

I have a treo 650 that is not evdo, and it downloads stuff pretty damn quick.

I have a Treo 700p on Verizon, and I also have an Express/34 EVDO card from Verizon and let me tell you. EVDO vs EDGE is a huge difference.

I have done many things on my EVDO card, from watching YouTube videos, to VPN, SSH, video conferencing, Skype, Joost, downloading files, etc. The speeds aren't limited to carrier specific apps.

Are people just completely ignoring wifi? I don't need 3G, its HAS WIFI!

Wi-fi only works in hot spots, and it can be tricky to connect to networks. I used a Nokia N800 Internet tablet for 2 weeks and getting a wi-fi connection outside of my HOME was so impossible that I returned it. I live/work in Times Square.

I love my 3G on my phone. I had to tell a cab how to get to my destination and was able to do so on the go w/3G. If using wi-fi, I would be out of range.

I posted this in another thread, but figured it would be important to post in here as well:

Took 2 weeks to get that response ... they are very slow on email.

Just cruising through and noticed a few tidbits on why people don't want to buy it. Remember though, they can update this thing and will update it in the future. Just like the :apple: TV, which I have, it will be updated as time goes on. They just need to make sure there are no kinks in the system. I also wish they were a little bigger in Data capacity. In regards to AIM, they can easily give you an update via Itunes and bam, you can use it. It shouldn't be that difficult. It won't be the future phone where you see the other person, but just chatting it up on AIM would be sweet, voice chat or even texting via it. And the 3G would be a nice addition but the Wi-Fi is all I'll need. Hopefully no data plan for me.

Anyway, I can't wait to have on in my hands on the 29th and can't wait for the first big update on it. AIM, google+apps, Push GMAIL, a ton of cool **** will be coming out within the next six months after this product hits the stores. Remember...there is always One More Thing...

ccreighton - It's my understanding unless Apple built in some unactivated hardware or was able to do an update without an FCC leak on it, that it can't go from Edge to 3g without building a whole new phone.

I'm curious how WiFi is all you would need. You don't plan to use the phone in the car, etc. etc.?

My husband has a 3g phone now and I think we'll be waiting for the 3g version as going from 3g to Edge would be a bad thing. Unless AT&T beefed it up enough to not make a difference somehow. But it's my understanding EDGE would be like being on dial-up. We'll wait cuz there's nothing worse than slow internet. Especially when you're used to fast.

If you plan on just using hotspots, you better hope it's free. Starbucks (as pointed out as others) works with T-mobile as well as most other corporation hotspots do, and you still have to buy a data plan (from T-mobile, and I'm not sure how that would work out with an AT&T locked phone) in order to use it.

Also, (I think, and have no idea because I've never used an iPhone and don't know AT&Ts policies) but aren't you overlooking the ability to SMS if you don't want the data plan? Obviously not the most important function for many I know.

Many hotels charge $10-12 bucks a day. Many Airports charge as well.

Seriously, if one can get away with just using wifi - PLEASE let me know how you're pulling this off.

Re: SMS - I admit to being blazingly unknowledgable of it.

I might be wrong....but I'm pretty sure that when you sign a new two year contract, you only have 2 more years from the new start date....it doesn't add to the end of your contract

so besides the cost of hardware, upgrading to the 3g version should not be too much of a problem

EDGE isn't quite like being on dial up. It's quite a bit faster than that. Standard GPRS is like being on dial up. True, EDGE isn't as fast as 3G networks are, but it's still a good step up from dial up speeds. 100x more useful.

Everyone who has posted in this thread should read this post and all of my others.

#1 The difference in actual speed between 3g and EDGE is noticeable but negligible, period. It would be comparable to the difference between a 2.0 ghz machine and 2.33 ghz machine. Definitely not worth waiting for.

Plus, the phone uses WiFi!!!!!!! You can get Wifi mostly anywhere and that will be your superior-to-3G ticket for most iPhone use. Edge will fill in nicely no matter where you are.

Get an iPhone, don't listen to techy babble about 3G...nonsense.

Also, don't count on a 3G iPhone in 6 months, you will be terribly disappointed. Don't count on any new iPhone models until late 2008 if then. Remember there is a roll out process for this product to different areas of the world and they are not likely to upgrade the model before Asia even gets the product....that would be a stab in the back to American buyers.

Instead, expect lots and lots of content for the current iPhone model. LOTS of content.

What's your experience with this? I have now a Treo 750 with at&T (3G), an EVDO Rev A card from Verizon (2nd Gen 3G - in the US anyway).

I have previously had an EDGE blackberry and an AT&T EDGE card. EDGE is a joke. Perhaps it will have some utility after at&t's upgrades. The speed differences are real, even on mobile devices.

Also, I think you and others ahve been repeatedly asked, HOW DO YOU GET BY WITH WIFI? WiFi costs money almost everywhere I see it, and the real kicker is that it is usually not the same provider. I know in my travels I would have to buy from 2 hot spot proivders just to cover my airport time.
