In 10.3.3 I could play a YouTube video in a forum thread and shrink it down to inline view so I could continue reading the thread while the video played.

This doesn't work in 11.1b4. Videos have to play either fullscreen or stopped.
However, on the YouTube site, inline playing works like it used to.

Bug, or functionality change? It annoys me either way.

iPhone 6S.

Nothing, huh? Too busy worrying about the home button lag that may or may not exist?

Not sure about iOS 11.1, but with iOS 11.0.3 that functionality seems to be there. When the video is playing full screen and you tap on it to see the controls you can then tap on the icon with two arrows at the top to shrink the video and it will continue playing inline while you can move around the page that it's on.

Yep, I don’t have the arrows. I only have an x that closes the video and stops it

That's odd. This is using Safari and trying to watch a YouTube video here at MR for example?

Yeah I just tried it on the MR homepage. Same behavior. Either plays fullscreen or not at all. This is Safari on an iPhone 6S running 11.1 B5.

Interesting. Just tried it again on the front page too. If I swipe down to minimize it then it makes it smaller and stops it, but if I tap on it while its playing in full screen and use the arrows icon by the 'X' then it makes it smaller but keeps it playing. This is with iPhone 7 running iOS 11.0.3. I guess one possibility is that this was changed (or got broken in some way) in iOS 11.1.

Guess it's off to file a bug report.
Would be interesting if someone else running an iOS 11.1 beta could check it out and post their experience. Have you posted about this in any of the 11.1 beta threads?

For me iphone 7+ tapping on the icon next to the “x” does nothing while in portrait orientation and in landscape all it does is zoom the video. Like the OP I am unable to in-line play the video.

This is with iOS 11.1?

Perhaps it depends on the video in some way as far as what controls/options are provided?

Yes, 11.1 Developer Beta 5. Tested on a video on the MR front page, just as been discussed in this thread. Unlike the OP though I do see the button next to the “x” (arrows) but as I said, for me all it does is nothing while the phone in portrait orientation and zooms in on the video while the phone is in landscape orientation. Swipe down stops the video.

Are the arrows for you pointing outward when you are watching the video full screen or inward? They are inward for me, which basically shrinks the video down when I tap on them.

Toggles between outward and no arrows.

I do have the shrink to fit button but that only fits the video to the screen size.

I posted in the beta thread, so we’ll see if people can forget their stupid home buttons for long enough to test something else.

I haven’t tried on my phone yet, but on iPP 9.7 everything works as it should. I can minimize it, maximize, go to home screen and video plays in lower right corner. Click on “X” and it closes.

11.1 beta 5

That’s a whole different thing. You’re talking about PIP. We’re talking about in-line.

Well, with iOS 11.1 officially out I installed it on my iPhone 7 and just remembered to try this out. Looks like this was indeed changed in 11.1.

Prior to 11.1 I had the shrink or expand option next to the close option, but now that has been replaced with zoom/fit to screen option and it doesn't look like the previously existing shrink/expand one is there anymore. Not sure if this is an omission or bug or some kind, or an actual feature change for some reason.

You remind me, I haven’t filed my bug report yet.
