2019, 21.5 inch iMac. Monterey

I bought this a year ago to replace a similar 2008 iMac, and immediately noted the lack of a dedicated audio 3.5 mm input jack, which the old model had.

The one jack now there is supposed to serve as both input and output, but I can't get it to recognize a source as an input. Going to Preferences> Sound> Input, I see the internal microphone option but no Line In. This is true with a 3-point stereo adapter plugged into it and an analog source (a tape player) providing a 2 channel signal.

I was told at some point I needed to use a 4-point plug (tip/ring/ring/sleeve) of the type used for video sources (2 channels of audio, one of video) for the Mac to recognize it, but using a video cable with that type of plug as an input with two channels of audio connected (and the third one dead) I still don't see it listed as an input.

What's the answer? Thanks.

I believe you need a USB audio interface.

These range from very basic (around $15) to very expensive (thousands).

You can start by browsing here:
Can you give us an idea of WHAT you want to connect to the Mac?
A mic?
A headset with mic?
Something else?
Mono?
Stereo?

By the way, there's a digital audio sub-forum here at macrumors...
