Haven't seen this happen before, in fact I rarely see any background usage over night, but woke up this morning to see my battery in the red so I checked and saw that WhatsApp had been running for almost 5.5 hours overnight. What on earth could it be doing?

You'll also see that I get incredible battery usage too. I'm still on iOS 14.3.

Mark Zuckerberg up to his old tricks. 🤦‍♂️😂 turn off background app refresh. 😁

By default, whatsapp constantly uploading your contacts to their server. It also does cloud backup nightly if set up that way. If there are issues with the cloud (eg. connectivity on Google Drive or iCloud), or with your own ISP, then maybe the app just keeps retrying endlessly. This happens on my Android as well, when upon waking up, I still have a persistent notification of Whatsapp still waiting for connectivity to backup. Could be part of the reason.
