Hi,

I'm curious what's inside of windows vista. Is this OS developed from scratch or did they add bunch of stuff on top of win XP? It looks to contain many features to improve user interface -- somewhat similar to OS X -- but I don't understand why minimum hardware spec is so high.

Max processor power is necessary to run multiple spyware apps and virus scanners at once while trying to use word and MS publisher. ;)

Vista's hardware requirements are oddly high, I think it's mostly because of Aero. I bet it's also so they can sell more PCs (and more OEM copies of Windows).

I'm pretty sure Vista, like XP, is based on Windows NT.

It is and it isn't. There's plenty of new and "original" code in there to justify the jump from version 5.x to 6.x.

One key example is the TCP/IP stack which they dumped the XP and earlier BSD stack for a new CTCP stack.
