New products are shrouded in secrecy, even within the company itself. They are unveiled at “prayer meetings” when Jobs himself appears, the pentecostal fire descending on the heads of the faithful, in jeans, trainers and a black t-shirt.

That does seem to be an apt analogy. I guess MacRumors would be one of the larger cathedrals. Would that make Arn a bishop or a cardinal of our church?

Stuff like that makes me want to not be a Mac user.

It is all too much Jonestown…

From the tone of the review, this book seems to be little more than an extended version of the same old clichés we've been hearing about Apple and Jobs forever. I mean, Apple must be a cult and Jobs a guru. How else could they have succeeded? Not by building products people actually like. Never that.

The analogy to Henry Ford is far more apt. Every so often an industrialist appears who has the ability to see over the next hill. Jobs is obviously one of them. This doesn't mean the people who buy Apple products are borderline dysfunctional personalities waiting to be blessed by Steve Jobs. Nobody ever said that about the people who bought a Model T from Henry Ford.

Apparently history will have to tell this story. Too many of the current story-tellers have visions clouded by banalities.

No, at least on IMO. Much of the flowery language in the article comes from the reviewer not the book.

I agree with this as well. I read the book last year and found it enjoyable. It offers certain insights on how Apple does business along with a good overview on Steve's track in the business world. The book is certainly less "cult of Mac" and more "this is why Apple is successful."
