I have a 2013 iMac with a 3 TB Fusion Drive. On instal, the bar said 29 minutes, then the countdown disappeared & the bar got to about 95% of its length, then has stuck there for more than an hour now.
I had two USB hubs, a second monitor (Cinema Display), and an exterior Time Machine Hard Drive plugged in, but all are now disconnected. What to do next?

I'm in the same boat. I'm screwed. I made a time machine backup right before doing the update. Somehow my external drive is now bad and can't be read or repaired so I can't restore. I've rebooted into recovery mode and tried restarting the installation but that just puts me back in the same spot. Stuck.

Ouch! I hope someone can give us both help here!
I tried CMD + R but the iMac just booted back to the same screen/progress. No offer to go into recovery mode. My keyboard is the wireless one the iMac came with; could that be the problem why I cannot even get to recovery mode?

I have the same problem on my MBP 2011 model. I've decided to use time machine and restore to my last update I did last week. I will download a clean copy on an 8gb sub stick and try that method. All this wastes so much time!

I switched off the iMac, waited a few moments, & then restarted while holding down Cmd + R
First two times it went to the same screen & stayed there
Third attempt, the same screen, but after two minutes the restore screen came up. I am now restoring from a Time Machine save from Yesterday - not worth the risk to try again, I will probably wait until the first update is available before trying again

Always a good idea to make a usb installer for time like this

-dl el capitan
-don't upgrade,close the update app
-plugin min 8gb usb stick
-open disk utility, and partition stick as followed...OS Extend (journaled),GUID partition table
-open Terminal command
-paste this command (without the ") "sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction"
-wait 20 min or so

to use plugin usb stick and hold down "alt" option key at boot and pick el capitan...will take a while...open disk utility and
partition internal drive as OS Extend (journaled),GUID partition table...close disk utility and pick install osx...wait 2-30 min and done!

Cool! unfortunately this did not work for me, thus the roll back (2hrs 38 minutes to go... :))
First time I had an upgrade problem, & I was especially hopeful as this iMac is relatively new, cycle-wise, was a refurb from Apple purchased just a couple of months ago etc.
