Install 10.12 in a 2nd Partition

I have installed each public beta release in a new partition. Once the PB goes GM I want to keep using the new partition and delete the old partition with 10.11 once I am satisfied. So far I have managed to screw it up and I have to wipe my HD clean.

I can create a new partition and install 10.12. What is the procedure to keeping the 10.12 partition and deleting the 10.11?

You can delete the 10.11 partition just fine, you just can't expand the 10.12 partition to use that space.

I assume here the 10.11 partition is first and the 10.12 one is second?

If so, once you decide to commit to 10.12, you can boot to 10.12 and in Disk Utility erase the 10.11 volume then in the restore tab restore 10.12 to the now empty 10.11 partition. Then option key boot to the new 10.12 partition. From there delete the old 10.12 volume and expand the new 10.12 volume to take up the whole disk.

My problem was erasing first partition and then trying to expand it to one HD.

The first partition may have been configured as a core storage volume. When you get ready to do this, run the two commands below in Terminal and post the output so we can see.

diskutil list

diskutil cs list

Okay... you should be able to use Disk Utility to restore (clone) the 10.12 volume up to the Macintosh HD )10.11) volume. Then boot to the now top 10.12 volume and remove the old 10.12 on the bottom. Then expand the new 10.12 into the empty space.
