Install after erase - This is not a supported method of installing the operating system

I'm trying to do a clean install following the apple instructions here under erase your drive: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904

After erasing, when I attempt to install the dialog says "This is not a supported method of installing the operating system. Please run Install OS X El Capitan.app that you downloaded from the App Store.

Not sure how to get to that app or what I did wrong if anything. My bootable drive is an SSD if that makes any difference. This is on a 2011 iMac 27 that was recently upgraded to El Cap.

So is it saying that when you try to install through recovery?

I believe your iMac shipped with OS 10.6, so you will need to boot from the 10.6 OS DVD that came with your system. Then upgrade to OS 10.11. The problem is since you wiped your SSD the Recovery Partition is gone so the recovery defaults to Internet Recovery where it tries to install the OS your iMac shipped with. OS 10.6 is not supported by internet recovery.

EDIT: BTW, you will need to update your original OS to 10.6.8 before installing El Capitan.

Do you have access to another mac? Then you can make an USB installer for 10.11

Another option would be to:
1) reinstall your system from your backup,
2) download the full El Capitan installer,
3) Quit the installer app before it installs (after the which language question),
4) find the "Install OS X El Capitan" installer (6.08 Gb) in the Applications folder,
5) make a bootable El Capitan USB thumb drive installer,
6) boot from the El Capitan USB thumb drive installer (select at start with option key),
7) run Disk Utility, erase your internal drive then Quit Disk Utility,
8) select Install OS.

EDIT: Let us know if you need information on how to create a El Capitan USB installer.

Thanks All, I was able to get Apple on the phone. I attempted Internet recovery but it only offered me the option of recovering from Lion !! That recovery failed saying there was some corruption (sorry, I don't have the exact message).

I did end up creating a recovery USB. Before I could use it I was offered an appt. at the apple store so took it there. It just took a few minutes for him to load up El Capitan so I'm set. Not sure what the original problem was. I did have the recovery partition there looking at the disc utility but obviously it had some issue.
