Install Mac OS X from DVD

I have a Mac Pro (early 2009). I have been trying for awhile now to do a fresh install onto a new hard drive (actually 4 new hard drives) Each have been formatted by a different mac. All appeared in disk utlity on the second macbook so aI know the drives are good.
I received this mac with a RAID CARD which is dead. (battery) so I took it out.
Anyways the disk (one) is in the dvd drive and I press C while start-up. This only gets me to a folder icon with a flashing question mark.

Any ideas?

Not sure if the MP came with an OS installed or not (doing a fresh fresh install seems to imply that maybe there was an existing OS install...?). If it did come with an existing OS install, do you know if the DVD icon is recognized when the MP is booted from the existing OS install?

Which version of OS X did the Mac come with? Which version does the Mac currently have? Which version are you trying to install?

Are you using the original discs that came with the Mac? You cannot roll back to an earler version of OS X unless it is the one the Mac started with?

I am doing a fresh install because I needed the os to be on one HDD- not two. In addition, because the raid card battery was dead it was horrible slow.
The dvd rom has disk #1 of 2 labeled " MAC OS X"

Because of it running so slow- I decided to reformat the HDD's and start new.

What OS X version number is listed on the label of that DVD?
Your 2009 MacPro came with 10.5.6, or later 10.6
If you have the 10.5.6 version, it has to be the original grey-label disk (and not the black commercial OS X 10.5.6, which won't install directly on your MacPro.)

So, what is the OS X version listed on the label of that DVD?
Are you sure it's the DVD that shipped with your MacPro?

If your DVD seems to be the correct one - do you see it as a choice when you restart while holding the Option key?

If all that doesn't work - is your keyboard a wireless model, or is it a USB wired model? (and is it an Apple-brand keyboard?)

RAID Card connector

Is the (dead) RAID card an original Apple Raid Card? If yes, did you re-connect the iPass connector back to the motherboard? Made that mistake once, by forgetting it...
