Install Sonoma on separate volume of HD

So I have a MacBook Air M2. It is running Sonoma and I like it, but I have this program I need to run and it only runs succesfully on Ventura. I do not want to downgrade to Ventura, however I would like to set up my laptop to dual boot between Sonoma and Ventura.

I created a separate volume on the internal drive for the ventura install, downloaded the ventura install program but it does not allow me to install even on a separate volume because it says I am on a newer version of the OS (Sonoma).

Is there a way to stay on Sonoma, but install Ventura on the separate volume on the HD? I have tried direct install and recovery, both methods a no go.

What you want to do is most definitely quite do-able. I have done it and it is recommended by Apple:

Use more than one version of macOS on your Mac.

I don’t know why you are not succeeding but hopefilly the Apple KB will show you.

You may need to make a bootable installer. Highly recommend Mist app for this.

I think this process works when you are installing a newer version of the OS. But going to an older version I am never given the choice of selecting the volume where to install it. It just says from the get go you cannot install Ventura cause you are on Sonoma which is newer.

You need to create a bootable flash drive for what you want to do... I have never used an Apple Silicon Mac but I think it uses the same process as the intel version...

It seems that you are trying to install Ventura downloaded from the App Store while running Sonoma which is not possible... Even Windows will give you a warning when you try to install Windows 7 while running Windows 10...

this process worked great. I am running Sonoma along Ventura in different volumes. I can boot into either with no issues. Thanks.
