is there a way to install windows 7 rc on VMWare Fusion without burning the iso to DVD? perhaps using a USB drive?

As far as I know, VM software (Parallels, VirtualBox, and VMware) support mounting ISO images natively, as virtual optical devices. You don't even need a USB drive or anything like that. Check your favorite VM software's documentation for how to set up an ISO file as a disk.

Follow this guide on how to install. You can have vmware fusion install directly off the .iso file.
