I apologize if this problem has been solved and the solution posted somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

I'm trying to create a bootable recovery disk for Monterey 12.7.2 for my MacBook Pro (2015 model). When I downloaded InstallAssistant.pkg for Monterey 12.7.2 and ran it, it seemed to go through all the install steps, but at the end gave a splash screen saying "Installation Failed" (See attached screen-shot). I downloaded and ran it again with the same result. I then re-booted and tried again: no joy.

In the past I successfully created bootable disks for Monterey 12.4 and 12.6 using the same procedure. There is no mention
in the failure message of Gatekeeper being the problem. The install app file does appear in the application folder but when i run it in terminal I get the message "Install macOS Monterey.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application."

[I tried downloading macOS 12.7.2 from the Apple app store, but after fifteen minutes it said the estimated download time was 28+ hours! I gave up. Downloading it from the server linked to by MrMacintosh already takes 6 hours (I don't have a very high speed connection.)]

Any help with this would really be appreciated. Thanks.

I had the same problem starting with 12.7.1. See my post:

MacOS Ventura (13.6.2), Sonoma (14.2) or Mist worked fine.

A pkg can be installed from Terminal and the verbose option should provide more information if it fails to install

Code:
sudo installer -verbose -pkg ~/Downloads/InstallAssistant.pkg -target /

Thanks. Will check ou Mist. But since it worked fine for Monterey 12.4 and 12.6 on the same MacBook it must be something Apple's done -- I don't think I've implemented any other new software that could posssibly affect this. (It's really frustrating if Apple creates problems like this, that you have to turn to third-party apps to fix them!)

I'm a novice at using the terminal command line; don't know what to do with your suggestion. Do I incorporate some part of this in the sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume command?

I agree that I think it was a bug introduced in a Monterey update. It's frustrating to waste time testing the parameters of a new problem in software that used to work fine. Sometimes I have to use a workaround and not waste time for a fix from Apple. That is why I started using Mist when using a Mac with Monterey 12.7.1 or greater. Sometimes I just have to do what works.

OK, thanks. I've downloaded and installed MIST (though I really have no idea how I did it!) It's now downloading the InstallAssistant.pkg which will take at least 6 hours, so will let you know if it works. Fingers crossed.

No joy. Was not sure when MIST completed where the new .app file was located. Mist[?] had created a folder "Applications" within the regular Applications folder and placed an Install macOS Monterey.app folder there. (Or was this the old one?) Anyway I tried both with termial and got the same message: "/Applications/Install macOS Monterey.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application." It doesn't help that all copies of Install macOS Monterey.app have the same created and modified date (December 1, 2023) so I couldn't tell them apart, but I tried both.

As far as I can tell MIST produced no error messages, so I guess there's something wrong with the .app file served up by Apple. On the other hand it must have worked for other users, so maybe there's something wrong with my system.

Guess I'll have to live without a bootable backup.

Thanks for your help.

Mist Solved the problem! As I was cleaning up I found the .app file that Mist had created ("Install macOS Monterey 12.7.2_21G1974.app"). Mist had put in my Documents folder. Moved it to the Applications folder, changed the name to remove the "12.7.2_21G1974" and ran the terminal command. The system is copying 12.7.2 to the data stick now.

Thanks again for your help!

Mist can either download only or create the bootable installer. Not necessary to download only then create the installer with the Terminal command.
