Installation of iOS 11.3 requires iTunes 12.7????

To install the latest iOS update via my Mac, I have to switch to the gimped iTunes 12.7? Are you kidding me???

Other thread on this. - can do over the air update - but from what I read sync won't work in future.
Apple really needs an App app as iBooks works for books etc. Moving that and tones from iTunes is OK as long as you replace it with something else that works as well.

Apple seems to know iTunes us an overgrown octopus that needs to be split off and not grow back. Why is it so hard to commit resources? Seemsije it takes years. Inverted program management pyramid?

Google has the same challenges.
