Installation with SP1 disk

Yes, its a real copy that I own. I belive its SP1, I bought it a long ways back.

I have heard this requires SP2, however I don't want to dish out $200 to MS just for an updated version. How can I legally do this ?

I have an external CD rom that I could use, can I put the SP2 upgrade .exe file I downloaded onto it ?

Just curious, why does it require SP2 to install ? Is there ANY way around it. I have been reading about streamlining, but to be honest I can't find any clear directions on how to do this on a mac. I don't have my windows PCs anymore

I guess you want to use Boot Camp and not Parallels's workstation?

If you're willing to install a Windows VM using Parallels temporarily you can probably slipstream with it.

When in the Windows VM download nlite from http://www.nliteos.com and follow the instructions. You'll end up with an SP2 ISO file that you should be able to transfer to your Mac for burning.

Then remove the Windows VM (since you are not allowed two installs unless you have two licenses) and install Boot Camp and XP using the burned CDROM.

I think this is probably the safest way of doing it. Slipstreaming by hand is possible but nlite does all the work for you.

Ya, I can't do a vmware type install ... the main reason I am doing it is to play BF:2.

Looks like I have a very long night of getting this setup, I was hoping there would be an easier way.

You don't need to shell out more money to microsoft to accomplish this - but you will need a machine running windows (you could borrow a friends xp machine for this).

You need to download the Network sp2 update file (it's over 120 Megs) from Microsoft. It is designed for network installs to multiple clients, but also for the following:

You need to find a site (like bink.nu) that talks about making a "slipstreamed boot xp install cd" using sp2 - this is completely legal assuming you have a valid license to begin with (AFAIK). Check through google and find one that handles the software you have available to make the cd (such as Nero or similar) and follow the instructions, and you will end up with an SP2 cd to install with. Slipstreaming can only be done on a windows machine, btw.

Why can't you use Parallels Workstation? It would just be temporary until you get the slipstreamed CDROM. You really do need a Windows install to do this, and it may be the fastest way of doing it unless you know someone with a Windows PC to do it.

What I ment is, the end result needs to be a full windows install, not emulated

Welp, finally finished installing. Man, that was *NOT* fun.

First thing I had a bunch of problems with, was getting boot camp to work. It shouldn't allow me to create a partition without having 3 times the space avaiable. I tried 5 times to get a 10 GB partion, after doing some searchs I went with a 5GB since I didn't have enough free space. (I have lots of crap on the drive)

I ended up running the OS X installer CD a few times to repair the disk. Which also drove me crazy because I couldn't find my CDs at first and I was freaking.

Next was getting SP2 onto the CD. I am not sure WTF was going on, it took like 30 tries to make it work.

For some odd reason, the CD key wasn't working ... took about 20 tries then it worked. (No, I wasn't mistyping it ... I had someone watching me just to make sure I wasn't crazy)

The drivers took some work to install properly, took 20 mins to get them all together and happy.

Anyway, I am installing BF2 which is the primary reason I did all this. Hopefully, I won't be disapointed in it. (I bought the game months ago, never played it due to my old machine being crap)

Soon as I am done playing, I can't wait to get back to OS X. I forgot how much I hate windows.

i am giving nlite a go and i have reached an impass. i have read through nlites support/forums section with little help.

short version: after slipstreaming sp2 into my xp sp1 folder, nlite created an iso file it called winlite.iso. is this ready for bootcamp?

long version:
1. copied my xp sp1 disc to c drive
2. choose that folder on nlite screen #1
3. left nlite page 2 'preset' blank and hit next
4. chose 'integrate a service pack' and 'create a bootable iso' on nlite page 3 and hit next
5. on nlite page 4 i browsed for the sp2 which i downloaded earlier. it was successful
6. hit next to get to the bootable iso page
7. i left the iso label and additional attributes to their default and clicked 'make iso'
8. it completed successfully which created the file winlite.iso
9. i used nero express to burn to a dvd
10. is this ready for boot camp?
