I installed a fresh copy of Yosemite yesterday via a boot install drive I created on an external hard drive. Everything seems to be working well except for some application icons. The issue is with the icons of applications that I installed after the OS install. To this point, I have installed four applications: iPhoto, 1Password 5, Dropbox, and VLC. All four of these applications have the generic Yosemite application icon (white square with the letter "A" created by a pencil, paintbrush, and ruler in the bottom-right corner). The generic Yosemite application icon shows up in the dock as well as in Finder.

So far, I have tried restarting the computer several times, restarting in safe boot, and doing a PRAM reset. I have been using OS X since 2007, but I do not consider myself to be an OS X wizard. I've included a screenshot of my dock below, and as you can see there are two generic Yosemite application icons towards the bottom. Thank you very much for your help.

If I understand correctly, you are saying that when you drag an app from applications to the dock they show up in generic Yo folders?, and also generic in app window?.

Did you try disk utility verify, smc reset, and how many boots from reset pram?

The generic folders appear in the dock and in Finder windows. I've already done disk verify, SMC reset, and PRAM reset. I have reset the PRAM twice now.

When I set pram holding down the keys, I let the mac boot and chime about 6-8 times.. don't know why but it seems to make a difference.

The above suggests seem like a good idea. If it doesn't work you might try backing unto Mav, then fix perms, then rests, then clean install - after install resets again.. That got rid of a lot of quirks for me..[/B][/B]

I had the same thing happen a few times. After reinstalling the app(s), everything was back as it should be.

I have tried reinstalling VLC several times. Now when I view my Applications folder in Finder, I see the VLC icon but if I drag that icon to my dock it shows up with the generic application icon. As you can see in my original post, I also have the Applications folder in the folder/stack section of my dock. When I click the Applications folder in the dock I can't see the VLC icon but if I view the same folder in Finder I can see the VLC icon. I can't see the 1Password 5 icon in my dock or in Finder.

I will try resetting the PRAM again. I don't understand the bold portion of your reply. If possible, please explain in simpler terms. Thanks for your help.

lol, I do not see my original post in bold, but the quote portion in your post shows it bold. Please disregard the *boldness*.

Instead of dragging an app from the applications folder to your dock, open VLC (for example). Once it is opened, right click (option to keep in dock) on the VLC icon. See if that works better for you.
