I have restarted both the device and the computer. I have tried multiple usb ports(And I know the hardware is good because in a windows Virtual Machine on the same computer, a macbook, the device was seen by iTunes). I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, using all the steps in this paper:

Which includes the removal of the apple mobile device service. I don't know what to do next, the only way I can charge the iphone is if I open my windows VM and of course my music isn't on that "drive".
