This was my project of last week. I think it turned out pretty good. J@nus-Design bezel, Pioneer AVIC-D3 (bluetooth, xm, navtraffic, iPod, dvd & gps bypass) in my BMW 540i.

Looks awesome. Real clean. Great work and how is it working?

Works very, very well. The facade of the unit is scratched up from previous use so I'm replacing it with a new one (the thing that says "Pioneer" on it) but otherwise I'm super happy. I did the bypass and everything works great in motion, although it doesn't charge my iPhone 3G (knew that coming) but it won't play videos from my iPhone either, which sucks.

Nice work! I used to have an e39 540i, and I replaced all the speakers but I was too chicken to mess with the head unit. Nice clears too, btw ;)

Do you miss out on the BMW features now such as the on board computer, and the ability to change songs from the wheel? (I could be wrong, but I am just going off from a BMW X5 2002)

Older Pioneer model? Cause my f900 does both just fine?

Looks good though! I just did that a few weeks back on my Ford Escape (with some help from the boyfriend of course :p) and parts of it were a bitch to do, but the end result made it worth it. :D I'm sure you felt the same!

you could just wire in a USB port while your at it, it's a very easy mod and would be cool while your at it.

that looks good. i hope it has a brightness control though - my old flip out used to freaking blind me at night

Looks really good! Would like to do something similar to my 3 series coupe, but there is a lot of cutting involved and doing stuff to the heater box, as I am not great at DIY I havent tackled it yet. Although I do keep thinking about chopping my car in for an E39, the M5 are getting very reasonably priced, but do also quite fancy a 540 like yours!

looks pretty good, however i heard those things take a couple of minutes to boot up which kinda sucks.

Haha, great work! It looks nice!

The interior photo loaded before the exterior photo while I was viewing your great work. By the looks of it, I could totally tell it was a Beemer because I own one too!

Thumbs up to you pal! Hope all your work is worth it! ;)

You heard wrong. It takes 5 to 10 seconds from ignition to the time when the navigation screen is up. Music starts playing immediately.

I can change the songs from the steering wheel. You need to buy the PAC SWI-X module to do so.

Nice install

Is that an M5 front bumper or did that come on the 540i?

Its a M5 front bumper.

Yes, I had to cut out the air ducts and replace them with the janus metal plate. Its a very easy DIY if you own a dremel tool.

Is that a mybimmer.net face? I wish some companies would make a unit with a double din screen, but only a single din brains module.

No, its the Janus-Design bezel. Much, much better than the mybimmer version which has no groove and no mounting kit (and it cost less).

And yes, they do make slim depth double DIN units. They have the GPS module separate and you put it in the glove box, under a seat etc and run wires to the head unit.

Automatic or 6-speed manual? I drove the 98 version of that car in a 6-speed and to say the least it moved pretty well lol.

Autotragic but it does haul ass.

Ha, yea it does. Me and my buddy attracted some unwanted attention in it when we were messing around in it lol. That car is a beast and the police seemed to notice it lol.

I actually have had great luck, never been pulled over since I bought it (actually, I've never been pulled over in my life) - especially because I don't have a front plate, which is illegal.

i must have been looking at older firmware, 10 seconds seems generous though. I just read something about it taking a tad over 30 seconds or so but whatever, looks good.

Nah, definitely not. I'd be happy to take a video the next time I've got a camera handy.

actually, not even needed. Check out this video:

He turns it on at 18 seconds in, its powered up at 22 seconds in. There is no lag time/delay as far as I'm aware, if you had to wait that long then you saw a defective unit. The video seems about the same as mine, maybe 5 seconds after ignition before nav fires up.

not bad, i had just looked a while back because i was considering picking one up for my car but decided against it for that very reason.
