I'm not sure I quite understand why people are waiting for Installer -- it doesn't do anything at all that Cydia doesn't, does it?

I looked around, and other than (minor) interface differences, I couldn't tell any difference between the two.

also it's usefull to read posts before acting.

Code:
chmod -R 777 "/Applications/Installer.app"
- Hit Enter
Code:
chmod a+srx "/Applications/Installer.app/Installer"
- Hit Enter

can you add all the sources that are on Cydia?

As far as I know, you can't. Different repos.

Installer was more stable. We'll see how it is now since it's being developed by other people.

Heyy,

I know i am going to have a few people yell at me for this but..

How exactly do i get this onto my iPhone?

Pretend you are talking to a completely retarded person, although you may not have to pretend :)

Aka, simple terms ;)

Ta!

When I type the first command in putty i get an error saying the directory isn't there. My app folder is in mobile not root. I made one in root and put the installer app folder there but I get the same error. What am i doing wrong?

It is a leaked beta and it has not been officially released yet!

There won't be anything on it because it's not been released officially!

So that isn't exactly surprising!

honestly. were people expecting anything else really?

Don't people realize that Installer has been deprecated by Cydia?

Everything about Installer is pointless and unneeded.

Installer has a much better interface, however it is impossible to tell how well it works as there is nothing to install except 2 photos and a program that runs on the iPhone behind the scenes!

Whether Installer or Cydia is better depends on the sources!

Cydia is just starting to get lots of stuff on it - including a 2.0 version of Inteliscreen and Themes.

It is perfectly possible that now apps are getting ported to 2.0 that Installer could yet "steal" all the new app sources - it just depends on the repo owners and we won't see what happens until Installer is officially released.

I installed it on my iPhone 3G and I have some observations!

Obviously the app needs to be manually transferred to the iPhone.

There is only 1 way to do this at this time using SSH and an FTP/SSH application on your mac or pc.

I tried using iBrickr just to transfer the files over but the application folder was not able to be opened so I had to install SSH.

You will need to reboot your phone 2-3 times before SSH is running and you can log in - I recommend 3 times then it should work perfectly.

Then you need the phone IP from the wireless network settings.

You can log in using Fugu on Mac or winSCP on PC.

Then transfer the installer.app file to the applications folder.

You then need to set the permissions as instructed above so installer can actually "install" files!

This can be done with putty or using the command line prompt in winSCP or alternatively using Terminal on Mac.

I initially could not get the permissions to change - I tried using mobile terminal on the iPhone and that failed and I could not log in using Terminal on mac.

In the end I rebooted and then it finally worked when I tried the command line in winSCP. I changed the permissions and I was done!

It was not hard but it was frustrating with SSH log in difficulties etc...

I also recommend you have bossprefs so you can turn SSH OFF! if it is on it may use extra battery power and leave your iPhone open to hacking by anyone with a wireless connection who is near you.

As for installer itself - its a nice interface but as I said how well it works can not be judged without anything to install!

At this time it may well be a beta but without anything to use it for I am not having any issues!

What? All you have to do is install OpenSSH and then log in. No reboots required ... maybe back in the day of 1.0.0 jailbreaks when we were first getting SSH running but certainly not anymore. Honestly I didn't even know people still used iBrickr.

The whole "omg openssh kills ur battery" myth has already been busted, you can stop spreading that lie now. It's even in the Cydia FAQ if you read them. No one's going to hack your phone, besides, that's why you should change your root and mobile passwords with passwd. Had you read the FAQ you'd know that you can do that without hitch with Cydia's BSD subsystem too.

I disagree with you on 2 things there...

First of all you are at risk of getting hacked - its much easier to turn off SSH.

Its not likely but its not impossible. As for the battery - 2.0 already drains the phone enough so lets not leave any chances at all of it draining anymore though I knew as I wrote that that the devteam said SSH doesn't drain battery power.

As for rebooting - maybe on your phone it worked - but it didn't on mine and I wanted to make sure that it was clear for others with the same issue to reboot.

As for your comment about 1.0 jailbreak - its not accurate.

Independence asks you to reboot 3 times for SSH all the way up to 1.1.4.

The SSH daemon is very touchy and it can be unresponsive almost at will so just remmeber that!

In installed OpenSSH with Pwnage when I pwnd and it's worked from the moment my phone came back on. I never had a dropped SSH connection. Psst... Keep your screen running or run Insomnia so it doesn't sleep. ;)
