Hi, i bought my son an Nvidia GTX 680 Mac Edition for Christmas. Is there anything I should be aware of while installing it? Is going to loose any functionality? He also has Windows 7 installed. Any problems there? Just want his Christmas to go smooth. This is going into a 2008 Mac Pro.

All should be fine - a large number of us are not only using that Mac edition card but far more are using PC versions of the same card with the mac edition's bios flashed on them.

You could make sure that the mini PCIe power cables are in the box but they should be in there if it's a sealed mac edition carton. Took a few reboots to get Windows 7 drivers working ok on my 2008 but rock solid ever since.

My son certainly likes playing Minecraft on mine with all the settings maxed out with rudo plays shader pack at 1920x1200 :D

Merry Xmas!

Not much you need to do. Just make sure you have Mac OS X 10.8.3 or newer installed and plug in the card. You won't lose any functionality.

On the Windows side, remember to install the Nvidia drivers. When I installed my GTX 680, I used the latest drivers from the Nvidia website.

yea macpro 3,1 here. I just popped that fat puppy in, and i was good to go.

However, I had to use the DVI connector only, as the other connections were giving me weird issues. YMMV

Thanks everybody. Well see on Christmas. This is going to make me jealous as my 12 core 3.06 gig machine only has a 5870. I may have to get one for myself.

Get a PC reference design card and flash it with the mac EFI bios. I bought a used but unregistered warranty evga identical to the mac card for just under $330. Flashing took 5 minutes in bootcamp and the two PCIe power cables cost under 15 bucks. All the instructions and the files are here :D
