I'm about to buy a Mac mini "Core 2 Duo" 2.26 (Late 2009) for a very good price. Right now it just has 2GB of RAM in it. I have 8GB of PC3-12800 RAM that I have laying around that is two 4GB sticks. The Mac mini uses PC3-8500, officially maxes out at 4GB, but you can use up to 8GB if you apply this http://support.apple.com/kb/DL888 firmware update. So my question is, can I use the RAM I have laying around for the mini? They are both DDR3.

It might work, my 2009 MBP coming with 1066 MHz RAM now works with 1333 MHz RAM, though 1600 MHz RAM might be another issue.
If the 1600 MHz RAM are 204 pin modules, give it a try.
