Hi Gang, (Mid 2012 Macbook Pro, i7 processor, Mountain Lion (But I believe it has been upgraded, but the system is not recognizing any IOS)

Apologies for the long post, but I've already tried the conventional stuff, to no avail.

Upon startup I got the dreaded folder with the "?" Suggesting that my laptop could not read my startup disk. When I "control R" startup, the Disk Utility "repair disk" is there, but I cannot click "continue." The "disk0" does not allow me to click on "verify disk" or "continue." The disk titled "MacOSX Base System" is there, but I can only verify disk, I cannot repair disk (even after verifying).

I believe I have a "Machine backup" saved, but there is no option that allows me to use the function. When it searches for "Time Machine Backups" nothing comes up. I definitely have an "iTunes" backup saved from a while back, but not sure what good that will do me.

"Get help online does not work," even though I am connected to the internet. It will not connect to the Apple Support website.

Re-install IOS is there, but even after connecting to the internet, the Macbook asks which disks it wants me to install IoS on, and there is no disk available to highlight, to continue. The operating system that it is trying to install is OSX Mountain Lion. However, I am fairly certain that I previously upgraded to at least Mojave at some point.

I have an external wireless WD passport drive. WD claims that I can install a "service pack" that allows me to install a Mac IOS on the wireless drive. Will the MacBook read an external, wireless HD as a startup disk? There are USB ports on the drive. I could get a male to male USB connector and connect it to the MacBook in that manner, if that will work. I also have a 1G USB thumb drive that I could possibly install an operating system on, if that will work.

At this point, I'm simply looking to recover data from my old MacBook and move it over to a new MacBook. I have a 2021 MacBook pro available to me as a go-between, if that is any help.

Questions:
1) Do I have to install the same IOS, or at least a similar version, in order to obtain my prior data?
2) What is the best method to get this thing up and running, or to transfer my HD, to attempt to get my prior data off of my old MacBook?
3) As previously asked, will the Mackbook read a wireless HD (or thumb drive) as a startup disk?

When booted from Recovery (Command+R) and in Disk Utility, make sure menu View > Show All Devices is enabled. Is it possible to post a screenshot or picture?
