Hey everyone, after all the hype about 3.0 i was thinking about installing it tomorrow since my dev account since december is sitting here wasting. But the thing that concerns me is that i still haven't gotten around to getting a mac, so i was wondering, can i still install fw 3.0 through iTunes in windows? And if i was able to, when any new versions come out, or the final release comes out, can i upgrade to it without hassle, or would i need the xcode organizer, toolkit, and etc to do the upgrading?

Also when it says you must use an authorized device, what does that mean? can i authorize only a certain number of phones, or as many as i want? And if it is a certain number, can i change the device from time to time as i currently have 3 iPhones haha :)

but what is the best way to install to preserve all of your current things- through iTunes, or through the organizer? And can or should you restore from backup if presented with that option?

I was actually having some issues with my current version software (2.2.1) so I wonder if I should restore from a backup or not. Would it be hard to set it up as a new phone in the beta firmware?

You can install it with a windows computer provided you can extract the dmg

I extracted it on my mac, but installed it from my PC

Would you mind explaining how you went about installing it in windows? I cant find a thing in iTunes that would allow me to browse to it or anything. However I did find a few things that allowed me to browse the dmg file. Please be patient, im a little bit of a noob at this, I came over from the winmo camp :)

I believe you hold ctrl or alt while clicking check for updates in iTunes. You'll have to select the ipsw inside the dmg, so you have to extract the dmg somewhere first.

thanx for all the replies :)

But as for the authorized devices, and how people say you need the Device ID, how does that all work? When i update my phone to 3.0, will my dev account auto lock to that phone, or can i update any or all my phones to 3.0, or any future updates as i please?

Also, after the update is installed, can i start using it right away or does 3.0 require anything special, like activation with xcode?

Yes, you have to have your device ID registered with your dev account for each iPhone you plan to develop on or run beta OS software. If you install the 3.0 beta before registering your device you'll brick your iPhone. Log in at your developer portal on the developer site. You'll find detailed instructions on registering your device and installing the beta OS.

You won't brick your phone, you'll just have to go about getting the UUID in a different way. Read about it here. Use the option titled "Better". That's what I did about 12 hours ago and it worked a charm.

To Install on Windows you have to extract the DMG file using a program called "TransMac". Second, through Itunes click on your Iphone hold down SHIFT and click on check for updates, Select the file you extracted and you're done ^_^ enjoy

Seems kind of silly to pay $99 just to get buggy beta software 3 months before everyone when you don't own a mac to program for the device. 3.0 is pretty nice though although the settings app can be a bear.
