So we found a old iPad in a drawer, probably several years old. I did a reset on it, but when I try and activate it through the set up process, it says servers are down and to try setting up via iTunes (I hear this is an issue on older iPads)

So I boot up our Macbook for the first time in almost a year, and updated the OS to Monterey, and now it shows I am running Monterey 12.3.1 which according to when I look under updates, that is the up to date version, but when I try and download iTunes from the Apple Website, it tells me to update my OS, and if I download a previous version of iTunes it tells me I need a older OS version. This is so frustrating.

This is why the Macbook sits unused 99.9% of the time, its so un user friendly lol.

Apple Music has replaced iTunes for music and the finder has integrated the syncing features.
If you want to install and version of iTunes, use Retroactive
It’ll allow you to choose which version would suit you.

I’m just gonna ignore that snarky entitled comment at the end of your post.

You don't need iTunes to update your iPad. It's done in the OS now: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/update-device-software-mchl0e5e3d56/mac

Being proficient with Google search goes a long way.

All good suggestions above. One other: if you have an external drive, set it up as a boot drive, install a version of macOS on it that has iTunes (I know High Sierra still used iTunes and maybe Catalina too (but better check that one)), boot your MBpro with that drive to get into a version of macOS with iTunes still in charge of such things. Revive the old iPad with iTunes. Then boot back to Monterey and it should connect/sync as described in post #3.

I was looking at what you linked, Thank you!!

Do you know if this will work to activate a older iPad? That is what I am trying to do :)
I’m not sure, but you won‘t damage if it doesn’t — unless you smash it out of frustration. :p

Only one way to find out….

I was going to shelf my Dell XSP 9380 2019 13" this month of may
until i need something to fix an older 2010 ipod touch.
the i realized how much better Windows10 is.
this weekend i will try monterey, but fear the worse!
