Installing leopard cant free up all of my hdd

Okay I am installing leopard on my imac using leopard assist. Everything is a go until I get to the part on the leopard install when it told me I didn't have enough room. Well leopard needs 5.9 gb to install if I cut out all the extra stuff and I only have 6gd hdd. (I have a wd external hd but my current os wasnt supported.) So anyway I erased evrything in disk utility and it says I have 5.9 free but I actually have 1gb that is still being taken up thus I cant install leopard still. How can I completely erase the hdd so the entire amount can be used? Thanks.

i dunno bro I bought the imac second hand. It only came with 6gb disk space.

Use Disk Utility to erase the drive.

I think you can access disk utility from the OS install disk. Hidden menu at the top of the screen IIRC.

You are not going to be happy with that 6GB drive and Leopard, or even Tiger. You will need to alias the Applications directory if you plan on doing much with it.

You need to perform an Erase & Install then click Customize and uncheck Print Drivers etc.

Sound like the person you bought from left all his files on the HDD.

What year iMac is it? You may want to pull up the disk in disk utility to see if its partitioned or something. If not, definitely put a new drive in there and start fresh. Even if you got leopard installed, you won't have any room to install anything else.

Agreed- at least the part about the external drive's current OS not being supported.

As to the question about doing a 5.9Gb install on a 6Gb drive there is a simple answer. No way, no how is that ever going to work no matter how much you clear up. The OS needs to write temp files to the disk during operation which will be far larger than the 1/10th of a Gb you would be expecting to have left after installation-- not to mention how badly Leopard would suck on a system old enough to ship with a drive like that (obviously a G3 processor since the specs have to be tricked with Leopard Assist). Looking at MacTracker it seems that this would have to either one of the "rainbow" series that came in one of five colors (and no FireWire, but with USB 1.1) or the DV slot loading iMacs (with Firewire 400 and USB 1.1) since these were the only ones that came with 6Gb drives. The fastest of these had a 400Mhz processor- less than half of the required speed of 867Mhz to qualify as a bottom end system to run Leopard with!

Hate to come off sounding cold, but the sad reality is that the $129 Leopard disk would be worth more than the whole computer!

dont even try. the reason the drive has a gig missing is cause its probibly the formatting info. dont you know all drives are given their space amount as unformatted. its always less

6GB hard drive on an iMac? Sounds like an iMac G3 to me.
