What is the emphasis on a patcher when installing Mojave on my APSF drive? Is the patcher for only machines not compatible w Mojave alone? I have an old installer I made for 10.4.6, but then I'm reading about a patcher. Do I need the patcher on a compatible 17,1 iMac?

"Do I need the patcher on a compatible 17,1 iMac?"

That's a 2015 iMac?
(things go much better when you use the year made, and not the "17,1" type of ID)

If so, everymac.com says not needed.

there
17.1 iMac seems very Monterey ready and beyond.
you need a link or copy of Mojave OS if you want to use that.
Apple now auto selects the latest OS through their upgrade app system.

to answer your patch question, My MacBook air from 2010 needed a patch to fun Mojave.
where High Sierra is the last OS that will support the MacBook, thru 

hope this helped!
