Installing new X1900 XT card on a early 2006 mac pro

Been searching the boards for awhile now trying to find install guidelines (if any). I have a Mac pro 1st gen (early 2006) that has the nvidia 7300 card. i bought a ATI X1900 XT to replace it.

When i went to reboot after installing the card in slot 1, i have no video output, (but the fan does spin). Are there drivers to install? The box did come with PC/Mac install software that when run says its for the Mac G5 edition "This product is intended only for the Dual Core Power Mac G5 systems. A different system has been detected"

Now i know i dont have a G5, but understand this is the card that i use? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The x1900 was a massively defective series of cards with very high failure rates. The 5770 is usually the cheaper, more reliable, and much faster option.

Also, you bought the G5 version which doesn't at all work in a Mac Pro.

The X1900 sucks!! Stay far away!!

They market it as if it's an upgrade. It's not. It's the most finicky problematic overheating-prone piece of garbage ever.

Well, had issues with my Mac not posting, some major issue somewhere, i figured i would start the process of elimination with the video card. Bought it on eBay $69. brand new, seller said it would work and by my research said it would as well.

As it turned out it wasn't the video card, it was my logic board that failed...so in a nutshell figured ide try the "new" card out! no loss, but a new card would be nice as i do a ton of video editing. Ideas as what is a good replacement or my 1st gen mac pro?

The Radeon 5770. It's $250, but likely worth it.

There is some debate as to whether you should buy the PC version and hack it to work in a Mac, as that might be cheaper, but given that option isn't really supported by Apple, I'll just suggest the Apple 5770 and leave the talk about the PC versions to other posters.

you've answered your own question...

... the card is for a specific revision of G5 Power Mac. It will not work in your Mac Pro. Snag a Radeon 5770 and call it a day.

I seriously have had more problems with my old x1900... I thought my $3000 investment was all but lost!

read around then bought the radeon 4870HD and never looked back, it's like having a new machine for $200
