Installing OS 9 on with OS X. Does it work?

I have os x panther installed on my machine and now want to install os 9 on it. I have a bootable os 9 install disc and it boots fine, but when i go to install on a drive , my macintosh HD is dimmed and cant be selected. The only way for it to be selecable is if i go to options on the installer and click clean install.

My question is, is there any way to install os 9 on with os x , without making a separate partition?

You probably don't have the MacOS 9 drivers installed on your hard drive.

I also didn't have it installed on my iBook. But, I just copied the system folder of os 9 to the iBook from my G5, and it works like a charm! The control panel also came up, it's there, it's only hidden.

Is it the PowerBook in your signature? I'm not sure if it'll let you install OS 9. I can't remember when Apple prevented computers from being able to install OS 9 though, and MacTracker is being particularly vague on the subject.

Do you have Classic installed onto the OSX system? If not, it should be on one of the disks that came with your machine.

I actually just bought a used ibook g3 600 to use and abuse, now i can't get os 9 on with osx. I had a ibook g3 500 i sold for profit, and it had os 9 on it first, then i installed os x on it on the same partition and it worked fine. So now i don't know if you can do the same the other way around.

I think so too, they prevent you from installing any older version of the OS than what came with the machine

Your iBook will definitely run OS 9, but if you have ever reformatted / erased the HD and then installed OS X on it you may not have the OS 9 drivers installed, as MisterMe said.

You'll need to install OS 9 first, then OS X if you want OS 9 bootable. Failing that it's Classic under OS X only.

Uh I've installed OS 9 over OS X before. For some reason Classic OS's didn't really reformat the hard drive. OS 9 just seemed to install it's own System folder right next to OS X. Even though I thought it's erase the drive.
