Installing Programs on OS 9 help

hi guys i just aquired a G3 power pc 1 gig ram, power mac. and right now i have nothing on there except for the operating system, but the operating system did not come with a web broswer, so i got one from my other computer, firefox, and then burned it to a cd, and then took that, and put it into my mac. So now when i go to run the DMG, is says - "could not find the application program that created the document named firefox_.DMG"

so that is what i am getting, can anyone help me out ??

I don't think DMG's worked on OS 9. You have to realize that OS X and OS 9 and very different, and now that the transition to OS X is compete finding older apps is not super hard, but it isn't easy. You'll have to find Internet Explorer for your G3, cause that is the best browser for the Classic OS.

That site has all the old browsers. Not sure if there is a FireFox for OS 9.

Another important thing to download will be stuffit expander. Versiontracker has an OS 9 section.

Are you sure that you did not get a web browser? That computer shipped with Netscape Communicator 4.79 and Internet Explorer 5.1 preinstalled. The most recent MacOS 9-compatible version of Netscape is Netscape 7.02. There is a slightly more recent version of Mozilla, Mozilla 1.2.1. At any rate, Firefox was never ported to MacOS 9.

As for .dmg disk image files, they do not work on MacOS 9. The older OS supports .img standalone disk image files and .smi self-mounting image files. You need to look at the MacOS 9 sections of VersionTracker.com and MacUpdate.com.

Technically speaking, you can use .dmg files on an OS 9 Mac; you have to locate, download, and deploy the rare Disk Copy 6.4, which supported .dmg disk mounting under OS 9.

Problem is, it won't do you much good, since nearly everything distributed on .dmg diskimages = MacOS X applications which won't run on OS 9. A very tiny handful of them might be Carbon apps that will run natively in either environment, but most such apps were distributed as .sit files, not .dmg diskimages.

There is no such thing as FireFox for OS 9.

By the way, the "PowerPC" emblem on your computer doesn't denote anything. That's roughly equivelant to "Intel Inside" stickers on PCs. Apple stopped putting those on Macs during the colorful iMac era. So no need to mention that.

Just before the G3, all PowerMacs (I suppose "G2" and "G1") also said "PowerPC" but they had very specific model numbers, such as...

Power Macintosh 8100/100 AV

The "Power" meant it was a Mac with a PowerPC processor (as opposed to 680x0), the "8100" meant in the 8xxx family of computersr which were all towers and generally high end. The "100" was the speed of the processor. "AV" meant it had video input and output of some sort.

They changed all that with the G3. In my opinion that made it more confusing because now you couldn't tell what you had simply by looking at it.
