So, my nMP came today. I would rather do a full clean install of most of the software, rather than move all the legacy crap that has gathered on my cMP over the past 8 years. So I have a few, just a few, software packages that I need to install via CD/DVD.

Can I use my cMP as a DVD/CD drive in target-disk-mode in order to do these few installs?

Or can I burn disc images of those DVDs?

On the other hand, I still might need to pick up a Superdrive anyway for occasional use for ripping music from CDs...

Why not go out and buy an inexpensive usb dvd drive.

Yeah, probably will go to Frys at lunch tomorrow.. :D

But.. question remains.. can you access the DVD/CD drive of a computer that's hooked up in target disk mode?

You can on other macs. I use my optical drive from my iMac on my mac mini. No reason to think it wouldn't work between a nMP and cMP.

I must add...I do this over the local network, not in TDM, but in remote disc mode. I guess I've never really tried it over TB

I didn't have a need to buy one until I remembered the music part.. I need to hit Frys for one more minidisplayport to DVI adapter anyway... :p

This is very simple, just use disc sharing which was created for this problem when the MacBook Air came out.

On the cMP or any Mac with the optical drive, go to the Sharing settings and enable DVD/CD sharing.

Then in Finder on the nMP or any Mac without an optical drive, you'll see Remote Disc in the list of drives on the left with an optical disc icon.

Note this method is very similar to file sharing so it doesn't work with special discs such as copy protected discs, DVD movies, and audio CDs. But any normal data disc including non-copy protected software installation discs should work fine.

I wonder if Disc Sharing has ever been updated for Blu Ray media.

Thanks for that tip!!!!
