Apparently disk utility throws up a version mismatch error if you try running it on the wrong version of OS X.

I'd make a full backup before testing it the first time; and give the App a thorough workout.Create a small partition and install Yosemite or another older version of OS X. Boot into your new volume to run the old Disk Utility.

I don't understand how the new one is any harder to use than the old one. If anything it's easier to use and makes it that John Q user can partition his drive without having to really understand all sorts of tech.
