Why don't you install Windows XP first and then perform a fresh install of Windows Vista with your Academic Upgrade version?

Will it let you do that?

Yes it does :)

You see, when you start to install Windows Vista from your upgrade version, it will search your hard drive for a previous eligible version of Windows.
After that it's just like a regular full Windows Vista installation DVD.

I have the exact same Academic Home Premium version as you do.

I followed that guide and just performed a clean install, then "upgraded" (so I could activate).
