Installing Windows 2000 Professional under BootCamp!

Black MacBook with 1.25 GB RAM here. I've gotten XP installed under bootcamp, but since I hate XP, I thought I would try a (slightly) better OS... Here's what I've got so far:

-Heard that 2K would at least *install* if you renamed the CD so that it would appear as an XP cd. I did this (properly) but no go, it boots, but freezes at "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration".

-Backed up and cleared everything off of my XP install drive (a 5gb FAT32 partition on my main disk.)

-I'd just did a completely fresh, untouched install of Win2k under parallels, and so I booted ubuntu under parallels and grabbed the files from my virtual drive and put them onto my mac's disk. This let me get everything as-is.

-coped all of this to my bootcamp partition, and modified boot.ini to point to the correct partition.

It boots as far as the OS select menu, and when I select my windows 2k install, it freezes. I enabled logging, but there is no log file so it looks like it's not even touching the disk. I can't be the only one who wants to run 2k under parallels. What am I doing wrong here, and how can I get this working?

I have heard that the Apple drivers, which are in an 80mb EXE will not install in anything but XP pro. To get around this, I plan on copying my windows xp folder to the 2k install and manually install drivers by pointing device manager toward the INFs. As a final note, both of my windows licenses are licenses are legit.

I wonder if Windows 2003 would work in boot camp since it is atleast newer and knows the newer machines better

I have heard it does, but please stay on topic. Windows 2000 was probably the best windows that will ever exist due to its minimum of bloat, and if I must run windows on my Mac, then 2K is the only option.

Copying the Parallels install to Boot Camp isn't the best way to get this to work, since you'll most likely end up with the wrong assumptions for the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL).

If I wanted to install 2K on my iMac, I'd probably install XP first, then try to install 2K from the XP install in parallel with it, and still use the XP boot selector to point to 2K.

Finally, with nlite you can remove much of XP's bloat and make it what it is, a newer version of 2K.

Thanks for the info! Your other post helped me at least try XP, since I have an upgrade version. I'll edit my post later when I'm done installing 2k.

EDIT: I selected ACPI PC under the HAL selection menu, but my install still hangs at "Setup is starting Windows 2000." I also tried ACPI multiprocessor PC, but that hangs too...

SLIGHT UPDATE:

I have gotten 2k to boot by copying the files of a clean install from parallels to my bootcamp partition. I get as far as the win2k splashscreen, where everything freezes halfway. I changed my copy of hal.dll from stock to the ACPI version that was in the i386 folder of my 2k install disk and rebooted. I then got an error about my ntoskrnl.exe file being corrupt, which I've been unable to solve. If anyone has advice, please post.

I remember people were wanting this before bootcamp was released. I thought it had been accomplished so I did a bit of digging. Finally I found a thread in the OnMac.net forums. It has instructions that may help you out.
