installing windows 7 on mac

Hello everyone, just purchased a MBP, loving it so far, and coming from a PC I notice that there are a lot of programs aren't compatible with the new mbp including programs like puTTy, or packet tracer for my networking classes in school, so I googled how to install windows on mac and I followed the instructions from websites and videos but I keep getting error messages, is it because I'm booting from a USB? or I'm doing something wrong? I'm using boot camp....any help would be appreciated.

There's no need for PuTTy on a Mac. You can use ssh, ftp, etc. from the terminal using the built in Unix commands. Additionally, if you want a GUI for FTP, there are a bunch of options out there.

I've never used packet tracer, so I don't know of any alternatives.

In regard to Windows 7, you can use Boot Camp, but it has been years since I've set up a Boot Camp installation. If you want to run at native speeds and don't mind rebooting to go from one OS to the next, Boot Camp works well. I wish I could provide more insight to your troubles. For my needs, using VirtualBox from Oracle and using Windows on a virtual machine works well. Additionally, if you are studying networking, you may want to run multiple OS or different configurations, and virtualization software works well for this, allowing you to run the OS that you need without needing to reboot your machine.

I installed W7 in my MacBook Pro and the battery was ruined. It went from 8-9 hours, to only 2-3 (even in OS X). The trackpad doesn't work well and it's sloppy, and it slowed down the computer.

Windows is not definitely to be put on a Mac. I preferred to learn to use the Mac properly and now I am very happy with it. Haven't need anything Windows for years.

I've been using Windows for over 10 years and I'm sick of it, believe me I don't want to install it as well, but I just have to for my school classes, I found a couple puTTy alternatives but nothing for packet tracer...I might just install windows for this semester then get rid of it...boot camp is really not working out for me, do you guys have any alternatives?

Just get Parallels or VM Fusion and baam....You have use a virtual machine.

This is a good alternative if you don't plan to be running excessively resource intensive apps such as games. For productivity and running PuTTY these should suffice. There are also some free alternatives such as VirtualBox which should be more than enough.

I have Windows 7 on Boot Camp and it hasn't done anything to my battery. I fail to see how installing Windows can affect the hardware of a Mac.
