Installing Windows 7 to External Hard Drive

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if it was possible to install Windows 7 to my external hard drive and then run it with Boot Camp. I saw a step by step guide for doing this for Windows XP, so will Windows 7 be very similar? I only have an 80GB hard drive on my Macbook and most of it is used, so any space on it is precious. Here are some specs from my computer:

1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor

If I can't install the OS straight onto my external hard drive, could I install it onto the hard drive in my computer and then install any applications and such onto the external drive and run it from there, or will it be very slow?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you considered just installing a new HDD in your MacBook. It's really not very hard or expensive.

You could double your HDD size for $50 or triple it for $60 at NewEgg, and your old drive can be repurposed as an external with a $10 enclosure. So for < $70 you could have plent of room on your internal for Windows and other stuff and avoid headaches.

No it is considered user replaceable like RAM. Just don't break anything while you are doing it. It requires no force so if something isn't going together right stop.
