So after spending every single minute of my spare time the past week or two :eek: trying to install wordpress; I have resorted to using a 'one-click' install on my host provider. Which created it's own database and everything etc.:eek: very very clever; but I feel very dim as I cannot understand what I did wrong :confused:.
I edited the config file, properly and my database details which I set-up myself was correct as I checked it all out.
I checked out my FTP and the files it created are not visible under public_html so I'm in limbo as to how it has achieved setting everything up.
I think I may have had some problems with mysql as it seemed as though it was not working properly, as when I went to enter my password it would not let me enter anything but had to copy and paste it.
As you can tell I know nothing on php/ mysql, so I need not waste you experts time on this, but where and how has this one-click install set it all up without the files :eek:. Thought it would have been simple for me to set-up but clearly not :eek:. Had to revert to the dumb way of setting it up which I'm embarassed about and wish I could learn the knowledge properly.
 
My host also offers one-click installs, but I've never used any of them. They likely have a centralized install location that they can perform updates on. Then they just create some alias for your account to point at it. I'm not sure what files may have been edited or created to do this though.

Not sure why you had issues with installing it on your own. It's pretty straight forward as long as you have all the information setup right. May have been some kind of permission issue or maybe placing the files in the wrong spot, or maybe some typo. Hard to say. If there were some error messages to work from we might be able to narrow it down.
 
The one click install on my host lets you choose where to install it. It will load everything where it needs to be on your server space and then you go through the usual wordpress set up screens to get yourself set up.

Did yours not ask you where you want it? Aren't there a load of wordpress files on your server?
 
Just wanted to add you should not be embarrassed and it might be a dumb way (your words) but you're quite smart for asking for help! Most people don't.

I have a simple suggestion - install phpMyAdmin if you don't have it installed already, and use it to learn how databases in MySQL are created, how tables are created or imported and most importantly how users are created, access is granted from remote or localhost, and how specific privileges are assigned. By examining the menus and looking at the queries it runs as a result, you'll be an expert in no time. Then, when you do a manual install, you'll know how to do all the importing, user setup and basic security. Using phpMyAdmin also helps you as a developer debug and test queries, optimize and backup tables as part of maintenance, and so on.

I had a terrible time installing WordPress the first time, and then when a friend wanted me to help him set one up I had just as difficult a time again. Even with all the info, editing the config file can be a little tricky since it needs a login and password and you already have 3 or 4 setup just to get access to your domain and the tables and so forth. Don't feel bad at all. :cool:
 
Thanks a lot for your input fella's and offering to help me on it :). Very kind of you chaps :D, I managed to crack it :).
The 1st few tutorials I watched did not show me how to generate my own individual identification tag thingy. But managed to find a good one here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10fbwScPMtQ.
So thats all sorted :D. I used MAMP also for those out there which helps your database php/ mysql thing but I know nothing on this subject so I'm probably embarassing myself.:p

I thought I would be able to write multiple articles (blogs all over the place) after speaking with someone that just opened their own blogging website to promote their own construction company. He recommended installing wordpress. But wordpress has its own site and I recon it was the king of it all and wrote it's own blogging software. But I was planning to write a fair few newspaper articles if you like on the specialist subject of Formwork, writing in all different areas of the subject, so a few of them. Will this be possible chaps :).
 
Wordpress took 1 hour to install for my first time.

Just read the directions.

No, don't watch a youtube video for that. The documentation provided is very clear.
 
I install WordPress on a weekly basis, and really all you need to do is:

  1. Find some sort of MySQL database management in your web host's control panel
  2. Create a new database, naming it whatever you want.
  3. Create a new user and password for that database.
  4. Write down your database name, username, password, and find the database URL (often times localhost - but it can vary), and write that down too!
  5. Open your FTP management program, connect to your website's FTP server, and begin uploading everything inside the .zip file of WordPress you downloaded from WordPress.org into the /public_html/ or /www/ folder on your web server.
  6. Go to the URL to which you've uploaded these files, and fill in the fields with the info you wrote down from above.
  7. You're done!

Now obviously these are tentative instructions. Although many shared web hosts look similar and seem to offer comparable packages, their SQL databases and FTP stuff might handle things differently.

If you're stuck, it may be a good idea to refer to the web host's community forums if they have one, and ask the same question there.

@OP:

That could be phpMyAdmin which is very commonly found on many hosted web sites. I noted this earlier, as you mentioned since then you're new to PHP/MySQL so I felt compelled to mention it again -- a great tool and a great way to learn SQL and basic database management. Sorry for interrupting -- back to normal programming!

You're right, it could be phpMyAdmin - but that's an app that manages a MySQL database. I've never seen a low-cost, shared web hosting service that gives you root/admin control over your databases via phpMyAdmin.
 
Good point - it is true that low cost hosts restrict that kind of access. I personally use a VPS with full root access, and it aint low cost. However, I do wish to add that root is not necessary to create databases even on low cost platforms. Some of the better ones in the so called low end category pre-setup a shared environment where a user can maintain their own databases and tables and not affect others. This is supported in phpMyAdmin, you'll see something like Username_xxxx where xxx is the database or table. Such users can't restart MySQL and other priviledges disabled, but they can still do the basics.

Why do you keep trying to get people to PM you in so many threads? It comes off very sketchy and a little creepy. This is a forum where people ask questions publicly, and you keep trying to get them to privately message you when the forum is the better place for the discussion as it helps not only the OP, but also anyone who comes across the thread. I'd advise against making such suggestions anymore unless the situation calls for it.

He's probably trying to take the discussion and his help "offline" so he can charge consulting fees using the web design company he's advertising in his sig :rolleyes:
 
Nope, you've got me wrong! But that's okay. I wouldn't waste any marketing hours or manpower into joining a Mac forum solely to advertise my web design company. That'd be pointless.

Check my posts (the few of them that are out there), and you won't find an ounce of negativity. Just thoughts, ideas, insights, et al, ad nauseum.

I suppose I can understand how my offers to help could be misconstrued as solicitation, but they're not. I spend a lot of time on MacRumors for someone who's joined last month. I've typed many a word offering my opinions and encouragement-- and that takes time. I'm not hurting for money, and I would not attempt to take advantage of a member of a technology-related forum. I'm just here to help.

I appreciate your skepticism and cynicism, as I don't believe they're unwarranted, and it's in the best interest of the community to rid the forums of spammers, solicitors, and such.

migrating from wordpress.com to wordpress.org

I've been using wordpress.com. Now I'm interested in a bit of customization (via themes such as Thesis, Studiopress, or iThemes). I don't know css or php, and don't have much time to learn , other than just a tiny bit for a tweak or two.

My hosting service has a control panel that should provide easy creation/installation of wordpress.org in the 'right place' without having to deal with mySql, or php.

Question: once I have wordpress.org installed, and a theme, I want to import my wordpress.com blog content. Seems that I can export an xml file from wordpress.com. Is it pretty simple to import that into the new wordpress.org template ? any tips, or cautions?

It's pretty painless... I've exported posts and pages from a self hosted WP install to another without any problems. I'm assuming the WP.com to self hosted will be equally painless :) However, as I've not encountered nay issues in the past, I'm useless at giving tips or cautions. i'll leave that for someone else if they've got them :rolleyes:
