Hello!

I’m having major problems with a PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.2.7. When ever I try to log into the operating system it loads everything up and then automatically logs the user out again. The entire process from Log-In-Screen to Desktop and back to Log-In-Screen takes about 4 seconds!

Needs less to say this isn’t really long enough to determine anything; however using the First Aid Utilities on the Mac OS X installation disk I have managed to repeatedly verify that everything I can check is healthy. I have tried draining the battery in an attempt to clear the Power dependant memory, but to no avail. I have also tried to re-build the system using the “Archive User/Network Data” option but this has had no effect on the problem. I can’t wipe the HDD because there is critical data on there I need to recover. Also I can’t log in as another user to recover said data, or to determine if the problem is restricted to the users account because the muppet who owns the computer only has one user account and I can’t create another in the less than 4 seconds the machine is useable for.

Does anyone out there have any idea what’s causing this problem and how I can fix it? Thanks in advance,

Jezhead

PS: The PowerBook is completely stand-alone and has never been exposed to the web in its three years of ownership from new. There are no external devices currently connected to the Mac, and all external devices that have come in contact are Mac approved.

Have you tried repair permissions using disk utility from the install disk?

Try booting into safe mode by holding shift (I think) on startup and see if that lets you get in.

Yep I've tried repairring permissions and the HDD many times but no effect. Safe mode also has no effect I begining to suspect that the user profile has fallen over...... :(

Boot into single user mode and read the logs.

Could be the Finder is crashing, the WindowServer is crashing, the SystemUI Server is crashing, the loginwindow is crashing, etc..

Do you have another account to (successfully) log into on that computer?

Problem Solved

Cheers for all your help people, I managed to log in a root after discovering that a standard Administrator account exsists, as in M$ Windows, which I wasn't aware of. Anyways the data has been backedup and I'm in the process of re-building the system

There shouldn't be any accounts you're not aware of...did you buy the computer second-hand? Chances are that this could have been fixed without starting over. However, since you've already started that process, good luck! When I had a similar problem (locking the screen, not logging out), a reinstall did not solve the issue. Hopefully you'll get better mileage out of the time invested.
