Insufficient Privileges

I have an admin user account but my applications folder is still read only... permissions are set to system and admin. How can I fix this?

Well, start by repairing permissions from Disk Utility if possible. It's pretty easy, you just select your hard drive and press repair permissions. Disk Utility is in the Utilities folder.

Then, Get Info on the Applications folder via the File menu and make sure your privileges are correct. You may need to unlock the settings though.

I did all that. Seems like os x just doesn't reconize me as an admin... any ideas?

Does your account info in the Sys Prefs recognize your account as an "admin"?

Is it that you're not recognized as an admin, or that your /applications is read only?

Go to terminal and type:

cd /
ls -la

Does the entry for your Applications folder have these same permissions:

drwxrwxr-x 51 root admin 1734 Dec 16 15:32 Applications

?

Then permissions and ownership of the applications directory are not your issue.

Do you have another account that is an admin? You have to have at least one admin account on the computer...hmmm. It shouldn't let there be less than one.

P.S. Now that I think about it. How do you know your apps folder is read-only? Just out of curiosity, I want to make sure I really understand the issue you have.

run the groups command for your userid. use either your shortname or your longname in single quotes, assuming there's a space in it.

e.g., i get:

[~] > groups zim
staff admin
