I just finalized details with my Liberty Mutual insurance agent to cover my wife and my two iPhones. One stipulation was that they could not be used for business. It covers all accidents, from losing it, to spilling milk on it, to theft. There is no deductible. They are covering it under a computer equipment scheduled personal property policy. I think they're basically considering it a PDA. They also handle our homeowners insurance.

Total cost per year: $20

It actually covers up to $5000 worth of equipment.

Sweet. I'll look into it through my insurance -- Allstate.

As-is, I am so afraid to reveal it in crowded places. I was in the AT&T store to get the Jawbone and overheard a lot of people asking for the iPhone, only to be told they're sold out. So despite the amount sold, having one is still 'spechul' :p and I don't wanna have to always worry about getting jacked for mine.

Considering the price of the phone and it costing less than $50 per year to insure, you'd be a complete idiot to not cover it. It offers so many advantages over Applecare.

Thats the thing, I don't think there is a Applecare you can buy on the iPhone.
Anyway thanks for the tip I will call my agent on monday.

You can purchase Applecare for the iPhone, but that's not true insurance. It doesn't cover you in the event of theft or damage -- only a defect or malfunction that would be covered by warranty.

Sorry but you can't buy Applecare for the iPhone.
I just went back to the Apple web store and checked.

Au contraire, mon frere. From the iPhone service FAQ:
Can I extend service coverage on my iPhone beyond the warranty?
The AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone will be available in July. The AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone will extend the hardware repair coverage to up to two years from the original purchase date of the iPhone. The AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone must be purchased while the iPhone is covered under Apple's One-Year Limited Warranty for iPhone.
It is not yet for sale, but those of us who have already purchased an iPhone will be able to add AppleCare soon.

What if you are not an existing customer of home owners insurance (or some other type of insurance that is not car)?

How would you then seek out an insurer for the iPhone?

Unless you live with your parents and are covered by their homeowners insurance, you should really consider getting renters insurance. Just a couple of hundred bucks a year to protect all of your personal property from damage or theft, plus personal liability insurance for yourself. In which case, you would just be looking at a special rider to cover portable electronics like the iPhone.

If you really don't want renters insurance, I have no idea how you would go about finding coverage for the iPhone.

Just called State Farm - they will cover it for $130 a year with a $500 deductible... so not worth it.

I got mine insured with State Farm for 15 bucks a year with no deductible and it covers everything. I added the iphone to a personal article policy that I already had for my wife's engagement ring. I couldn't be happier, no more babying this thing! :D

That sounds more like it, my State Farm covers my laptop and my cell phone (not updated to iPhone yet, but similar value) at $100 a year.

This is exactly what I will be doing (in fact I'm gathering info this weekend). Did you both talk to an agent directly about it or go via their Web site?

That is simply killer! I love Liberty Mutual...not to mention my agent is hot :)

Careful about covering them on your homeowners/renters insurance - a claim may count against you with the two claim limit most have. Two or more claims like in 2 to 3 years will allow them to drop you or raise rates substantially.

Of course. People shouldn't frivolously file insurance claims. Odds are you won't need to use it at all though, let alone twice in 2-3 years. However if the $4000 worth of cameras and lenses in my camera bag ever get stolen, or someone snatches my iPhone, or my wife's wedding ring falls off in a lake.....its really nice knowing they'll be replaced (monetarily) in full with no deductibles. That peace of mind is, well, priceless.

My homeowner's with MetLife is covering two of them for $20 a year. No deductible. It's a scheduled item.

I have State Farms Insurance it's my parents (house insurance) can someone please tell me what i have to tell them when i call.. Do i tell them.." I wanna Insure my iphone? PDA?" please tell me thanks!

Hmm, I called State Farm on the 28th of June and they told me they no longer cover cell phones as they are constantly being dropped and whatnot. Do I have any other options? I love using this thing w/o a case but sometimes get a bit worried about carrying a $600 gadget around with me everywhere.

Edit: I just found this article. I don't live in IL, but I'd imagine it is the same deal. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure if they'll let you due to mixed answers, but I'd call and tell them you'd like to insure your iPhone under their Personal Articles policy. I think I pay like $20 a year for my Macbook, it has no deductible & covers all types of damage. I have it on my camera too and haven't had to use it yet but it seems like an awesome deal. I just wish I could get it on my iPhone.

If it's his parent's policy, he can't do anything. They have to add the personal article rider to the plan. He can't call up and add a rider to their policy.

I privately insure mine through a company that insures all my personal property (this is separate from my renter's insurance, because making a claim against homeowners or renter's is a great way to get an unaffordable rate hike, so you pay 6x the cost of whatever you broke or lost in increased premiums).

Be aware that you will need to prove you own the item. Take pictures of it, photocopy the reciept, etc. Electronics are generally insured for their depreciated value, unless you pay more for replacement value, and then you definitely need a copy of the reciept.

Yeah (wondering same thing), I've been gathering the same kind of info and was wondering what the best process was for getting these items insured.
