Intel 4000 vs iris

I am about to get a i7 2.3 GHz 2012 model but concerned about not getting the iris for graphics like the 2014 model. Since I am not going to game much other then light games like Minecraft, will the outdated graphics chip matter? I will also be using this as a media centre so will the Intel 4000 do the job with HD video? Will it do 4k?

The Intel HD 4000 is capable of doing 4k Video, not sure about how it would handle games, but it seems like it's fully capable via Windows only.

I "think" adding more ram would benefit too, for example 4GB system memory uses 1GB of that for the video memory, so adding 8GB system memory it gives it 1.5GB of that for the video and 16GB would make it a 2GB.

I tried some 4K video on Youtube the other night, it stuttered like Forrest Gump.

I'll try it again next week when I get my 8GB of memory and report back.

So for my conclusion, it might not be fully supported with OSX but you could with a Windows installation via Bootcamp?

I'm in a similar situation but for me is far more important a smooth 23,976hz playback (no interest in 4k at all)

Would it be better the Iris?

If that refresh rate is important for you and you need to have a mini, then get either a mid 2011 with nvidia graphics or a 2014. The HD3000/HD4000 won't work at that refresh rate for movies properly.

as long as you don't need 4K, the intel 4000 is enough to play HD movies

The Intel HD4000 will not do 4K (at least not in OSX). The 2014's will do 30hz 4K from the HDMI port so using as a media center would work. If using as a Media Center, the 2014's are probably better suited. Less power usage, better graphics (although the HD4000 can do 1080P with no issues, just not 4K). I'd even contend that even the base 2014 would be a fine Media Center since you rarely do more than one task at a time on a Media Center....

All Mini's since 2011 do 4K. At least: for movies. The Radeon 2011 and the 2014 do it at 23.976Hz, on the other ones you can watch them at 30Hz.

Also: I have a 2009 mini with a monitor that does not work at 23.976Hz for movies, but it DOES work at 47.952Hz. Very weird, I have a monitor that works judder-free at 47.952, 50 and 60Hz, but not at frequencies below.

So don't forget to try the double frequency!

Hmmm, I read (about a year ago) that the 2011 doesn't support 23.976hz playback but that this was fixed for the 2012 Mac Mini.

Anyone got a definitive source on this?

The base 2011 can't do it as it used a hd3000. The higher tier used AMD gpus which are capable of 23.976hz. The 2012 cannot do this and it is one of its main weaknesses.
