A new X series leaked and it will be available in Nov. BUT... it seems they just drop the price of X series instead of improving its performance. iMac Pro use Xeon version btw.

There is a W 2200 series apparently floating out there also ( probably shipping matter of month(s) after the X series so that Intel can work through their 14nm capacity issues. )

I guess the current iMac Pro might have a price drop?

Unless Apple is going to update to the new versions, I would expect not. The price discount for the W 2200 probably will not be as much to the X series (even though basically the same die with features turned off/on). One of the features turn on for the W 2200 series will probably be higher memory capacity. Intel has a track record of charging more for that. ( so in this case that would be the price drop discount would be lower. I think the 2200 will go higher to maybe max at 1TB but not increase the price. Or stay at 512GB which is still higher than the new X series. ). Obviously ECC would be a difference also.

So there may be some discount but probably not 50% sized one. If it is a small double digit one then Apple would more likely just 'eat' it themselves.

I don't think Apple is going to update the iMac Pro due to their track record inability to walk and chew gum at the same time. ( can only do 2 or so Mac upgrades in a year and put rest of product line on coast. This looks like a coast year for the iMac Pro. ). So if there is no major hardware change then it is highly unlikely Apple will change the price. ( it took from 2013 -> 2017 from them to change the price on the Mac Pro' ~3.5 years ).

Crazy to think if they did drop these into the iMac Pro (they won’t as they’re not ECC Xeon processors), the iMac Pro would give the new Mac Pro a serious run for money, for processor performance at least. Save for PCIe cards in the ultra high end the new Mac Pro is so expensive, most content creators for 1. Probably can’t afford it and 2. Probably don’t need it!

Then why Apple made iMac Pro for? It's been 2 years since they announced it without any updates. If they cant update Mac computers annually, then it's BS.

Btw Mac Pro 2013 is a different example since Apple failed it from the beginning including the design itself. They even admitted that they messed it up.

Well, I think it's safe to assume Threadripper (which has ECC support) and Epyc will be hitting Intel hard in the workstation space too, but I'm not sure of Apple's negotiating position concerning pricing since it's unlikely they can threaten to go to AMD.

Cascade Lake-X still seems to have only quad-channel memory so, even with 128 GB DIMMs, Apple won't get over 512 GB unless they add more slots to the logic board. Obviously advertised support for the HEDT version is only 256 GB, same as the current iMac Pro.

More memory support in the Mac Pro (increased from 1 TB to 2 TB, or, since Apple won't sell you unbalanced channels, 768 GB to 1.5 TB) is available with the high-core count CPUs for the low, low price of $3000 extra.

What's the chances of getting a spec bump for new CPUs for iMac Pros, when Glacier Fall W 2200 series come out?
We haven't seen a big update of any Pro lines, but what changes would they need to the current iMac Pro to drop in new CPUs? Apple previously hasn't been able to update well, but... there's always hoping they've turned a new leaf.

It's been two years since the iMP has been released. If they want to avoid the cringy delay like the mMP, they should at least release a refresh.

iMacs should come soon (Q1 2020, if we're lucky), which may introduce a redesign. Therefore, I wonder whether they are going to present a new chassis with the Pro line or with the more broadly sold iMac.

The theory goes that Apple made the iMac Pro as a stop-gap for professional users while the new Mac Pro was being designed and produced. The "trash can" Mac Pro was too constraining, but why it took Apple so long to handle that situation is anyone's guess... either way, the future of the iMac Pro is in question now that the new Mac Pro about to be released. I suspect it'll become more of an enthusiast computer or low-end professional device, and I wouldn't count on it being refreshed until a few months after the Mac Pro's release. We'll see soon enough.

I agree with you that Apple should really be updating their computers a bit more frequently. I get that there aren't huge advancements in the computing field like there used to be, but they've allowed multiple Mac lines to go without updates for surprising amounts of time. That's doubly true and quite shocking when you consider that this isn't some small startup that has limited resource to allocate; this is the most valuable technology company in the world. An update every 1-2 years doesn't seem an unreasonable expectation.

The impression I got (and I've seen multiple people agree) was that when Apple invited people to the "Pro Roundtable", Apple had viewed the iMac Pro as the successor to the Mac Pro and the need for a "real" Mac Pro had only become evident shortly before the roundtable. Hence the iMac Pro was released fairly soon after and we're still waiting for a Mac Pro.

Obviously this may have changed, but I believe Apple did not intend the iMac Pro as a stopgap when they conceived of it.

The iMac Pro still seems like a better value for programmers.

I think the MacPro 4,1 or 5,1 single tray CPU, just quickly coming to mind would say they will do so if they want to.

Edit: Now I think more the doubles had the same unbalanced configuration possible if filling all the slots too.

I'm not sure what they used to do, but in this case I'm just going off the Mac Pro specs page.

Gona build an 18 core Cascade Lake system and give up on Apple's slow performance and stupid prices.
