OS Neutral Intel Core i7-5820K VS 4,1 or 5,1 cMP Quad core

Hi Guys,

I know this is a Mac gaming and not PC gaming. I just thought there'd be some carry-over given my question. Am I as well off with a 4,1 or 5,1 quad core cMP running Bootcamped Win7 Pro with a GTX 980 from Macvidcards as I would be with a gaming PC from Xidax with the Intel Core i7-5820K Processor also running Win 7 Pro and the same GTX 980. Memory is 32 GB for each system.

I'll use the computer for academic research purposes creating immersive apps (Unity 3D) for the Oculus Rift . It won't be used for leisure gaming purposes.

Well the 4,1 / 5,1 Mac Pros dont support they newest processors. You can upgrade them to 6 core at 3,46GHz but they aren't as fast as the newest generation of cpus.
You would need to compare the benchmarks for a W3680 vs a i7-5820K. Also keep in mind you can overclock the i7-5820K. So if you were to add a liquid cooling system you can get above 4GHz easily. If you need it I dont know, thats for you too decide.
If you require pure processing power then you should go for the gaming PC.
Unless of course your programs benefit from having more then six cores. Then you can get a dual cpu mac pro and upgrade it to 2 x 6 cores. I think there was even a thread of someone upgrading a 5,1 to 2 x 3,33GHz (X5680) beyond apples 2 x 2.93GHz.
The rest is I would say a matter of personal preference. I personally would take the Mac Pro because I like the look of it and I need to have OSX.

Thanks Pro! I've decided to go with the i7 Windows machine. I'd end up spending more money on upgrades to the cMP, including an additional power supply if I ever wanted a 2nd GPU. And I don't even know if the nVidia SLI works under Bootcamp or not Hopefully, it will be a stable system.
