Intel Core i7 In iMacs - A Time Frame?

What are peoples thoughts on the Intel Core i7 chips appearing in the iMac range?

Reading the available info/speculation I'm guessing we'll see another iMac update in the next couple of months and then another one in in the late Autumn/Fall of 2009 which will hopefully include the Intel Core i7 chipset. The later the next update is then I suppose we can move the introduction of the i7 chipset back to possibly early 2010 (although that does seem to me to be a bit to far away considering some desktop PC's already include the desktop variant of this chipset).

Any thoughts?

Like everyone else on the rumour sites I have no idea when and even if this is going to happen, it's purely speculation. The next couple of months is a "guestimate" of mine based on no "insider info" which seems to make sense based on when the iMac was last updated and other info available on the forums and Mac news sites. Ultimately who knows apart from Apple, we might be waiting another six months for an update?

My interest is purely on the introduction of the Intel Core i7 chipset as that's when I'll upgrade my ageing iMac.

Late 2009 at the very earliest when the mobile version becomes available. More likely Q1 2010.

i7 in 6-8 months, if there's any update before that, it'll be very soon (<1month) and just be a speedbump, perhaps true Monetevina and 9400-9800's.

No. It'll probably be November if Apple plan on now releasing new products for the holiday period.

I hope you mean April/May of next year. There are NO mobile Nehalem chips and there will be no mobile Nehalem chips until Q4 2009.

I'm going to be the ever optimist and hope that Apple get the i7's into an iMac at end of Quarter 3 BUT more likely some time in Quarter 4 2009. 2010 does seem pessimistic (although you never know with Apple)

It all depends on production dates. If they don't produce them in Q3 (and few reports say that they will anymore), then they can't be in an iMac in Q3.

Q3 2009 is going to be tough for PC manufacturers. Without competition Intel doesn't really have a reason to push forward launches either. The same can be seen with ATi and the HD58xx that supposed to come out this June but you're not going to see it until DX11 is out.

To be fair I'm pushing it slightly with an ETA for end of Quarter 3, deep down I know it's not likely unless Apple and Intel come to some clandestine arrangement.

aside from the release date of the desktop i7 cores, the tdp is way too high ('bout 130 Watts) so like Tallest Skil said, its either waiting for the mobile chips
which will be around the end of Q2 (not Q3 or 4 like everybody is shouting)or they might very well go for the Q9000. However the i-Cores would be a better choice for Apple alongside the Snow Leopard release (=64bit); this is good becaus the i-Cores from intel are mainly quad core and have some sort off cool HyperThreading feature which give you 8 virtual cores. This alongside with Snow Leopard would be jolly good.

(oh and the nehalem chipset releasedates are Q2 for Clarkefield (i-Quad) and Auburndale (i-Dual)).

It'll be updated in 1-2 months. After that, it will be updated in about eight to eleven months.

With laptops being where the money is going to be, it would not be in Intel's best interests to have a massive 12+ months between having desktop CPUs on sale and bringing out mobile versions.

Show me, then, a press release stating that they will bring them out earlier, especially in light of that one article about manufacturers' desire to have slower chips longer.

Some notebook vendors have voiced hopes that Intel will consider postponing the launch of its next-generation Calpella platform to after October 2009 instead of July/August as originally scheduled so as to allow vendors more time to clear Centrino 2 (Montevina) inventories, according to sources at Taiwan notebook makers.

This makes me mad... I don't want anything slowing down Nehalem in an iMac, especially lousy PC laptops.
