I'm an ignorant Linux/Windows user, so How do I change my Hard disk icon?
Find an icon you like. Get info (command - I) on that icon and press tab so the icon in the Get Info window is hilighted in blue. Press command - c to copy. Then just get info on your HD, press tab so that it's highlighted in blue and press command - v to paste.
Edit: There's also another way to do it manually. It involves getting into system files, but if you do it this way, it will change the default image for all HDs. The folder is System/Library/Extensions/. Find IOStorageFamily.kext, right click, and select show package contents. Once inside, navigate into "contents", and into "resources". You'll find the icon files for removable, internal, and external drives. They're in the .icns format which is the format that every icon in OSX is in. By creating your own .icns files and replacing the originals, you can change the default icon for just about anything. Be sure to use the exact same name if you want them to be recognized. There are many other places besides this one to replace .icns files. Application icons are within their own .app packages, and System/Library/CoreServices/Coretypes.bundle contains lots of stuff, including the default folder icon, trash icon, network icon, applications folder, etc. As a tip to locate the rest of the icons, go into terminal and type in "locate .icns" (without the quotes).
have fun, just make sure to back up originals
